Al Capone's hide out. The Mineola Hotel is believed to be the largest wood frame building in the state of Illinois. It was built in 1884 and placed on the National Register of Historical Places by the United States Department of Interior & Parks & approved by congress on January 29, 1979. It is located half way between Chicago & Milwaukee, thirty miles west of Lake Michigan. The property includes seventeen & a half acres of land. Located on the property is the hotel, a full service marina and also a home which has five bedrooms, three full baths & three half baths. The property is located on the Chain O Lakes which has approximately 25,000 recreational boats registered to it. The zoning is B5 which is the highest commercial zoning, the rest of the property is zoned multifamily with sewer & water. The hotel needs to be restored. The pictures are a representation of what the hotel looks like now & what the original building looked like. In her day the Mineola was one of Al Capone's rest areas. He and his crew would come out to the Mineola to relax and get away from their problems as the Mineola was a safe house. More pictures are available |
