Mechanical: Hand-winding

I’ve always loved Bulova, an American company of great repute. It was founded by Czech immigrant Joseph Bulova and based in New York City, where the famous Bulova Observatory was located, high above a skyscraper on Fifth Avenue. Like Gruen, it also had a factory in (Bienne) Switzerland, established in 1912 and dedicated to the production of watch components and their assembly into jeweled movements. The firm is known for its aggressive advertising campaigns and for being the first to advertise on radio – with an announcer stating “B – U – L – O – V – A … 8:00p.m., Bulova Watch Time.”

I am pleased to offer for sale the following timepiece from the Bulova watch firm, a rarer than hens’ teeth vintage men’s Super Compressor divers model that dates to 1962 - 1963. A few companies offered “Compressor” models and they were the precursor of today’s modern dive watches, used by the pros for deep underwater exploration. I have sold Super Compressor models by Alpina, Jaeger LeCoultre, Wittnauer but NEVER have I had a Bulova – in fact, I wasn’t sure one existed until only recently.

A “Super Compressor” in itself is not a watch. It was a patented type of watch case that was used by several watch companies, some famous and some no longer n business. This case design was patented in 1956 by Ervin Piquerez SA (EPSA), a now defunct Swiss firm, and manufactured by them for almost two decades. And while most of the Super Compressors could be identified by their twin crowns and internal rotating timing ring, the name actually referred to the case’s sealing technology, which made use of a spring-loaded case back that sealed tighter as external water pressure increased. EPSA’s logo was a stylized diving helmet and it can be found either on the outside or inside of the case back. While most had crowns that were “cross-hatched”, this example has each crown signed “Bulova.”

Quadruple-signed, its solid stainless steel case measures 43.5mm lug tip to lug tip and 36mm in width (39.2mm with winding and timing bezel crowns). This works out to be 1-3/4 inches in length by 1-11/16 inches in width, not including the crowns. It is powered by its original 17 jewel, rotor automatic (11AFAC caliber) self-winding mechanism that has been fully serviced prior to auction, ensuring it keeps accurate time.

The 100% original black, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition – guaranteed untouched since it left the factory 50 years ago. It features a fully functional black and silver rotating inner bezel (controlled by the top crown) with luminous PIP, white enamel painted Arabic numerals, original white lacquer finish hands (with luminous that glows) and a ‘sweep’ white finished center seconds hand. Signed BULOVA below the 12 marker and SELFWINDING above the 6 marker. It is further signed SWISS just below the 6 marker, but hard to see in my photos as it’s partially below the rotating timing bezel.

The hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent, clear condition, securely fitted. The two-piece case is a heavy weight solid stainless steel example in excellent condition. The original Bulova-signed crowns are in excellent shape, operating smoothly.

Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is a screw-down design in great condition, just a few small scratches. It is stamped Bulova Watch Co., Stainless Steel, Super Waterproof – Swiss Made, 660 Feet, Brevet + 317537, Brevet + 337462, Antimagnetic – Shock Resistant – M2, 359,186. Brevet is French for patented and the “M2” is the firm’s date code for 1962.

Inside I find a clean rotor automatic mechanism that is signed Bulova Watch Co., [Caliber] 11AFAC - Seventeen 17 Jewels, Swiss- M3, . The M3” stands for 1963, indicating that the watch was cased up and left the factory in this year (a one year difference in case/movement date codes is very normal for Bulova). The inside of the case back is stamped 314, 7-62 - where the 7/62 stands for July 1962, when this case was made by EPSA.

This watch has been fully serviced to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted with a vintage 1960s Swiss Made “Tropic” rubber watch strap with original Stainless Steel (Acier) buckle. It will fit a wrist up to 8-1/2 inches on the second last hole but can be worn by those with wrist as small as 6 inches thanks to a total of 12 holes that run down the bottom section of the band. These original Swiss Tropic bands sell on eBay for $80 to $120 by themselves, and it is the perfect complement to this fine Super Compressor. Whether you collect vintage dive watches, Compressor models or just love cool looking Swiss watches this is nice, seldom seen choice.

  • Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. I treat buyers as I like to be treated: with courtesy and respect. I’m especially proud of my excellent feedback and high number of repeat clients. I’m a long-standing member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC), and have collected watches since I was a kid.
  • Watch sizes: I provide exact measurements in millimeters (the watch industry standard) and inches, and include a U.S. quarter in photos as a size reference. Draw the measurements on paper to help visualize the watch on your wrist. Remember, men’s watches from the 1910s - 1960s were smaller than considered normal today.
  • Buyers outside the United States with less than five feedback: Please introduce yourself via email PRIOR to bidding. Otherwise, your bid may be retracted.

I charge less than actual cost for fully insured, shipping with tracking – there are no handling or packing fees. Overall, I spent $1.22 for every $1 received for shipping costs in 2012 (source: Quick books data).
  • U.S. winners pay $10.75 for fully insured, safely boxed USPS First-Class Mail shipping. Washington State residents (and those with shipping addresses in Washington State) add 8.6% sales tax.

If you are an international buyer please wait until I invoice you with your shipping option(s).
