Among new and old watch collectors, the
Omega Watch Co. of Switzerland is one of the most
renowned brands of timepieces, a firm founded by Louis Brandt of Biel in
1848. In 1894 a new caliber bore the name of Omega for the first time, and since then the company has produced some of the finest caliber wristwatches money can buy. Omega is also my
favorite Swiss watch firm, unsurpassed when it comes to style and high quality for a not (as of yet) crazy high price.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage men’s Omega timepiece, a ca 1940 model featuring a classic 30T2 caliber mechanism, used in many WWII era Omega watches and later modified to become the 265 and 266 calibers (the telltale sign of this caliber is the larger than usual sub-seconds dial).
This triple-signed watch measures 38mm end to end and 32.5mm in width (35mm with unmarked steel winding crown). In inches this works out to be a bit over 1-1/2” long by 1-1/4” wide, not including the crown. It is powered by its original 30T2 caliber, 15 jewel, manual wind mechanism, fully serviced by my skilled watchmaker David prior to auction to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The silver, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition and has been professionally restored. It features a 60 minute outer track border, black enamel painted “Moderne” style Arabic numerals, original blue steel needle tip Spade hands and a separate, LARGER sub-seconds dial (engine-turned) with original ‘sweep’ blue steel seconds hand. Signed OMEGA below the 12 with trademark Omega symbol and SWISS at the base of the dial.
The hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent condition, a new old stock addition. The three-piece case is solid stainless steel and in excellent PLUS condition, coming together nice and tight when closed. Note the faceted lugs, in excellent shape. The winding crown is a new addition and is in excellent shape, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I find a stainless steel back lid that is free of any wear or engravings and is in excellent PLUS shape. Removing this lid (fits nice and tight) I find its original mechanism, signed Omega Swiss, 15 Jewels with caliber number of 30T2 stamped below the balance wheel. The serial number of #9,261,107 dates the watch to ca 1940 as per published production numbers, so a WWII era model.
The inside of the case lid is finely engine turned and stamped ACIER STAYBRITE – OMEGA, FAB. SUISSE, SWISS MADE with case number below.
This fine watch has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly and keeps accurate time. It is fitted on a new and high quality 18mm black deBeer lizard grain leather strap with a nickel free chrome steel German made buckle. All in all an excellent WWII period timepiece with a great Omega calibre under the hood, I think you’re going to like this one.
