Louis-Benjamin Audemars

(1782 – 1833)

Switzerland, Geneve

APPROX 1910’s

I am happy to offer for sale this gentleman’s vintage timepiece that features WHITE DIAL with GOLD HANDS, GOLD FILLED CASE and HIGH GRADE MECHANISM with BI-METALLIC MICROMETER REGULATOR & BLUE BREGUET BALANCE SPRING made by the venerable Swiss Watch Company of “Audemars Frères” in ca 1910’s. It was made in Switzerland, Geneve.

Yes folks, this timepiece is in amazing condition and only going UP in value.

Creation of a factory making ebauches, wheels and under-dial mechanisms at Le Brassus.

Adaptation of the Breguet calibre to all watch sizes and thicknesses.

Diversification of production (extra-flat movements, mechanisms of repetitions).

Decided to make complete watches. J. Louis Benjamin Audemars, with his sons, was a pioneer in the production of complete watches in the Joux valleys

Louis-Benjamin Audemars was the founder of the great company that bears his name. He was born in 1782 in Le Brassus and from the start of his apprenticeship showed unique talent as well as high manual skills. In 1811 he took over the business of his brother-in-law and his former Master Philippe-Samuel Meylan. He founded a factory for the manufacture of ébauches, pinions and minute-repeater movements.

Louis-Benjamin Audemars was a talented artist and craftsman whose skill, craft and creativity made him a legend in the Vallée de Joux.  He was a perfectionist, who rejected any work that wasn’t perfect.  Audemars was so convinced about the future of technically complicated watchmaking that for a whole year he carried on paying the last maker of under-dial works who was able to produce minute repeater movements, from his own pocket, to preserve those skills during the economic crisis between 1816 and 1817.

Because the Louis Audemars enterprise only existed for 74 years, only  produced about 9000 complete watches and went into liquidation in 1885, and because its successor companies only existed for a few decades producing fairly ordinary watches, the watchmaking dynasty of  Louis-Benjamin Audemars and its works were allowed to sink into oblivion.

After the collapse of the Louis Audemars company, the three sons of Charles-Henri Audemars, the youngest son of Louis-Benjamin Audemars, and the grandson Louis-Benjamin Audemars-Valette, (son of Eugène François Audemars) decided to continue the old tradition of the Ancienne Maison Louis Audemars under new names. In 1885, Hector (born 28th1864), the son of Charles-Henri and his brother Charles-Henri (born 18th November 1887), founded “Audemars Frères”. The oldest son, François (born 20th September 1853), founded “F. Audemars Fils”. In the same year Louis Audemars-Valette (born 19th April 1850), the son of Eugène Audemars (7th son of L.B. Audemars) founded “Louis Audemars” (“official” successor of Louis Audemars).

In recent decades very few watches by Louis Audemars have surfaced on the open market or at auctions.  The descriptions and dates are often wrong and the “Ls. Audemars” brand is relatively unknown, so there is no established basis for valuation.  In consequence the watches are sold below their value.  Neither dealers, nor collectors are aware of the historical significance, the rarity, the beauty and the high quality of watches from the Louis Audemars factory.

For Louis-Benjamin Audemars and his successors it was not only important to create a perfect and precise watch, but also to develop as many new and different complications as possible, and to integrate them harmoniously into the movements. At many 19th Century World Exhibitions The House of Louis Audemars was rewarded with the highest distinctions for their products. Some of their watches are among the most complicated that have ever been made. The watches of Louis Audemars cannot be bettered by any other watchmaker because of their technical perfection, the beauty and harmony of their movements, cases, dials and hands. They rightly have their place among the great Masterpieces of the watchmaker’s art.

This timepiece features an elegant new WHITE DIAL is in excellent condition, absolutely no chips of abuse. It is an example featuring an elegant black enamel 60 minute checkered outer track border, GOLD Louis XVI filigree hands, black enamel Arabic numerals and a recessed sub-seconds dial with “sweep” steel seconds hand and 60 second outer chapter. Signed AUDEMARS FRERES below the 12.

It is a registered design model that features a three piece GOLD FILLED case that provides with glass cover of back lid. This watch was converted from pocket watch. The lugs are in great condition while the winding crown is in very good shape and operates properly. The case, new custom made, fantastic, build specially for this excellent Audemars movement.

Peeking inside via the glass lid I find a spotless and high grade, manual wind, gold plated lever escapement movement with BI-METALLIC MICROMETER REGULATOR & BLUE BREGUET BALANCE SPRING.

The movement is signed AUDEMARS FRERRES – BRASSUS & GENEVE.

This watch has the ORIGINAL movement in an excellent status which was very well saved, considering age of this watch. Mechanism has been recently serviced to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping great, accurate time.

It is fitted on a new 20mm brown alligator calf genuine leather strap with golden steel buckle that has a great vintage look to it.

Diameter (with crown):        53.00 mm
Diameter (without crown):   49.00 mm
Watch crystal diameter:       43.00 mm
Thickness:                           16.00 mm

This rare watch winds and set smoothly while keeping very good, accurate time.

Because of the vintage nature of the watch I cannot guarantee its absolute time keeping accuracy even if they are in good running condition and in some rare occasions may require additional adjustment.

Recommendations for the owner of vintage watches:
- All Antique watches are mechanical. Many repairs will not be cheap, as most likely they will require replacement of non-standard parts (unlike most late model watches).
- Antique watches should not be beaten or dropped - because repairs may be expensive.
- Antique watches are generally NOT waterproof. This is because waterproofing was not in general production until the middle of the 20th century for most watches. Therefore you should protect your antique watch from exposure to moisture.
- If your watch becomes wet it should be dried off quickly. Carefully open all covers and use a hair drier to blow dry the movement, dial, covers, crown. This will reduce the amount of rust.
- If your watch becomes wet with any kind of salt water you should immediately immerse or spray your watch with fresh (no-salt) water to remove all the salt from the works before drying the watch completely. Any salt left in the watch will combine with moisture in the air to rust metal components of the movement, case etc.
- Winding any mechanical watch tight may break the mainspring. If you can avoid it do not wind the watch hard.
- When adjusting the hands of your watch, move them in a clockwise direction only. Counter-clockwise adjustments may damage the movement.
- If you must adjust counter-clockwise make it for small adjustments only (i.e. for minutes, NOT hours).
- Be careful and gentle when adjusting the movement speed (faster or slower). Don't make sharp movements, and don't touch other components in the movement especially the pendulum mechanism.
- Every 2-3 years it is necessary to service and oil vintage watches.
- If the watch is dirty - allow the watch to run down, don't wind it again until you have it serviced by a qualified watch repair expert. Dust will absorb and remove important lubricants and cause the movement pieces to wear down.
- To clean the case, dial and crystal you should use a cloth that does NOT leave fibers as these may get caught up in the movement. Check with your Watch repair expert to get an appropriate cloth.
- Keep your antiques watch away from magnets. Strong magnetic fields may affect the accuracy of your watch since some vintage watches were made with iron based components in the movement.
- Most Cases and Covers are fine components and will not handle abuse well. The watch should not be shaken, beaten, or stressed.
- Antique watches generally experience an error of up to 5-7 minutes a day. Any accuracy of +- 5 minutes is very good.
