Here is a really nice example of one of Meade’s best optical systems. The Meade 7" Maksutov-Cassegrain design optimizes imaging performance by utilizing a combination of two-sided spherical meniscus lens, a strongly aspheric f/2.5 primary mirror, and a spherical secondary mirror. The convex secondary mirror multiplies the effective focal length of the primary by a factor of six, resulting in an overall f/15 system at the Cassegrain focus.

The oversize 8.25" primary mirror results in a fully-illuminated (unvignetted) field of view significantly wider than can be obtained with Maksutov optics incorporating primary mirrors of the same aperture as their meniscus correcting lenses. Computer-optimized primary and secondary mirror baffles, as well as a sequence of field stops internal to the primary mirror baffle, yield lunar, planetary, stellar, and deep-space images of uncommonly high contrast and resolution. This also means that you can use one of the Meade focal reducers to further expand on the viewing options with this telescope.

A Cloudy Nights reviewer said, “The optics are wonderful. I noticed almost no spherical aberration, and the scope's collimation was dead-on. On Saturn, the views were razor sharp, and got a few "Oh Wows!" from the others present. One advantage of the ultra-long 2,670 mm focal length is that your comfortable 15 mm-25 mm eyepieces produce some pretty high powers.”

“On the planets, the Meade easily disposed of the C102, Ranger, and the non-sdf Renaissance. Note that none of these telescopes are slouches. Against the mighty Takahashi FS102, things got a little tougher. In times of good seeing, the Maksutov's images were just a tad sharper, with more slightly more detail visible on the ball of Saturn. Cassini's was also a little crisper, and easier to hold with direct vision. Due to the larger aperture, Saturn was whiter as well. . . . On deep sky, the Mak turned in a surprising performance. No, you can't see all of the Pleiades, or the Double Cluster. However, on objects like the half-dozen or so open clusters in Auriga, the Mak's images were so sharp and contrasty, you could have fooled me into thinking it was a refractor.”

This is just the optical tube with the front and rear caps.
