Mid Century Ceramic Bull Sculpture
~ Marianna Von Allesch ~

Hand-signed - 1950s

Large ceramic sculpture by well-listed artist, Marianna Von Allesch

Circa 1950s.

Inscribed signature on the front of the rear feet, "Marianna Von Allesch".

This piece has a molded terracotta form which is covered with a very even, dark brown, flat - matte glaze. Over the brown surface is a fine encrusted, almost volcanic, lighter brown mottled glaze, giving the effect of an ancient Mediterranian sculpture. In places the reddish - rust terracotta clay shows through as well, giving the surface true depth and some added color.

The sculpted form is sophisticated, stylized, cubist, and very modern, reminescent in style to sculptures by Picasso and Marino Marini.

Length ~ 13" / Height ~ 9.75" / Width ~ 6.5"

Marianna Von Allesch was born in Ingolstadt, Germany and studied in Europe with Bruno Paul and at the Royal Academy in Berlin and subsequently moved to the United States. She became a leading WPA ceramist who became known for her ceramic murals. She was also a craftsperson, designer, and teacher. She was the creator and founded the Pulaski Modern Furniture company, designed sculptures and decorative objects for GeneralCeramics, and was a designer of glassware for the Kensington Crystal Company. Her works from the early 20th century and the mid-century era are held in many collections and museums.
This sculpture is in excellent condition, as shown in the photographs, with no damage, no chips, nocracks, and no restoration. Light wear to the bottom of the feet which are partially covered with old felt, as you can see in the photo.
