Perfect Match for an SSD
The 17-inch Macbook Pro is a great laptop. Maxed out with 16gb of RAM and running off an SSD drive make it a very fast machine. The screen size and graphics are good stuff, too. Some of these machines can occasionally run on the hot side but using a utility program to manually control fan speeds helps a great deal in keeping operating temperatures under control. All in all, this machine is a good value.

A gleaming retro muscle car in a field of streamlined little sports sedans.
It's now mid-2015, and I just bought a 2011 MacBook Pro. Why?
1. The last of the 17" screens, mine has the optional anti-glare. If you do anything Adobe on the laptop, you need all the space you can get for the many menus and toolbars.
2. Apple hardware is pricey off the shelf, but lasts a long time. I can finally afford this machine, which I've wanted since it was introduced, and can realistically expect years of use to come.
3. The now-discontinued Unibody design allows opening the bottom: Previous owner installed SSD drive and maxed out the RAM. If something breaks down, there is a fighting chance to go in and fix it, as I have done with other Macs, iMacs and MacBooks. New models have gone to a thinner profile, but no user access is possible, even to replace the battery.
4. The last MacBook line to include a DVD drive, and the first to have a Thunderbolt port alongside the Firewire, USB and Ethernet.
5. The first generation to use perfected quad-core i7 processors.
Drawbacks:
1. Heavier than the new, sleek 15-inchers. No problem for me, but harder to pick up with the fingertips of one hand.
2. Less battery time than current models, and at this age, I will have to replace the battery in a year or two.
You can go anywhere and do just about anything with this beautiful machine.
The 2011 17" MacBook Pros marked the highpoint of the end of the Steve Jobs era. They are powerful, well made, durable machines that exemplify the best of what was Apple. Now, it's a 'prosumer' shake and bake company for iPhones and toys made to break. It's all about CEO Tim Cook pay out incentives. Sad. But, the opportunity to own a 17" laptop with a self-contained power that would have seemed unbelievable to anyone ten years earlier should be noted, because, most of the notebooks being turned out today are comparatively speaking - junk.
Love this machine!
Loving it! It's everything I hoped for. Very fast, great display, nice and large and very clear. Could use a bigger hard drive but that's easy enough to change. All the ports I wanted plus the super drive.
I feel I got a heck of a bargain considering all that came on this computer
my friend has a MacBook Pro 17 and I really liked the large screen. When I found this one, I thought at first it was a little over priced, but once I read about the upgrades that came with the MBP 17, I bought it. Plus a $100 coupon from eBay helped. This computer came with upgraded memory, a 1TB HDD, Parallels 7 with Windows 7, Office 2011, a full Adobe Suite, including Photoshop, and more software than I have room to mention. I was able to upgrade Parallels 7 to V10, and upgraded the OS to Mavericks 10.9. This computer is really great, speedy, and tons of software bundles. The only problem was the computer base itself. It looks like it had some damage at some time in the past. But that has not affected the performance in any way.
