First Gear Models did well in executing this detailed diecast model of a widely-used 1950’s medium duty truck. Ford redesigned their pre-war trucks for 1948 and began the F-series trucks using a similar cab and fenders for light pick-up trucks to medium duty conventional trucks. The 1951 F-6 was a 2-ton model rated for 14,000 to 16,000 lbs Gross Vehicle Weight. The 1951 F-6 featured a 254 cu in flathead inline 6 cylinder engine, 4-speed manual transmission, and 6 volt electrical system. The First Gear model for the 1951 F-6 is historically questionable with a V8 symbol above the grille, the V8 was in the heavier F-7 and F-8 trucks in 1951. The model 1951 F-6 is a 134 inch wheelbase conventional truck and the model was issued with a variety of truck bodies including bottler, stake, box van, tank truck, and wrecker. Each body style was issued in a huge variety of colors and markings, some are historically accurate companies and freight lines, and some are less-desirable, historically inaccurate souvenir items. The bottler body and stake body are well-detailed but the box van much less so, with no opening doors or lift gate. The painted steel disk wheels are historically accurate but lack some detail, the wheel holes are not cut out or blacked out and the hubs lack detail. The First Gear Ford F-6 model was probably over-issued, it seems to be the most numerous First Gear diecast resale items on ebay. The bottler truck is especially interesting and is no longer seen, it was designed to transport carbonated beverages which in the 1950’s were normally produced in reusable glass bottles fitted in sturdy wooden crates. First Gear made a fine reproduction of the bottler body, including a full load of wood crates with each soda bottle rendered faithfully. The 1951 Ford F-6 with bottler body is offered in a variety of soft drink brand colors and graphics, including Coca Cola, Dr. Pepper, Royal Crown Cola, Squirt, and several versions for Pepsi Cola, as well as some obscure regional brands such as Grapette, Double Cola, and Barq's.Read full review
