Really an R&B outfit, based in Oakland, California, their two mediocre jazz/blues albums are now of minor interest to 'psych' collectors. The band were formed by Paul Fauerso, after his jazz group The Tom Paul Trio had broken up and he soon recruited Pete Shapiro and Steve Dowler from The Marbles. Line-up 'B' remained stable for a long time, with the band playing around the Bay Area and as far away as Vancouver but gigging mostly in gyms and clubs in Berkeley, Oakland and San Francisco. They also played the Fillmore a number of times, thanks to their manager Ron Barnett's good connections with Bill Graham.

Gigs in San Francisco were slim except for the Fillmore because the other halls such as the Avalon and the California Ballroom were under control of the Family Dog and others that were more interested in the psychedelic sound than R&B stuff. Still, they did get to share the bill with Cream and Big Brother amongst others.

Linda Tillery joined after they ran an ad in the Chronicle looking for a lead singer. Steve Dowler:- "Bob and I drove to San Francisco one day to meet her and bring her back to our practice room which was the living room of the house we rented in Oakland on 14th street. After the first album came out we toured back east on Columbia's ticket, starting in Cleveland, going to Chicago and ending in NYC at the Fillmore East with Vanilla Fudge".

After the band went their different ways in late 1968, Paul Fauerso and Linda Tillery put together a new line-up ('D'). They had a much more 'hip' tighter and sometimes more jazzy sound than the original 'Zone but they kept the R&B roots solidly in place too.

Steve:- "Pat O'Hara played with the 'Zone for a number of gigs along with the rest of the horns, Todd Anderson and Steve Kupka when we could get them to join us and when there was room on the stage. Steve was in the band at Berkeley High playing baritone. The sound guy, Mike Ritter's sister Nancy and her friend Mary Hawkes knew him from Berkeley High and we eventually asked him to sit in on some gigs."

"Kup later played with the Motowns which evolved into the Tower of Power as you probably know. He was really good with tight horn section charts and along with Todd and Paul put together many of the fine horn sounds. We didn't use Steve as much as Todd and Pat, if I remember correctly but the combination of them with Paul on the B3 was dynamite."

Linda Tillery later played for Cesar 830 (a shot-lived San Francisco-based jazz fusion outfit from 1975) and had a solo career, whilst Patrick O'Hara, later played with Boz Scaggs.

Although musically a marginal case for inclusion in this book, The Loading Zone are still remembered fondly by fans of soulful R&B.
