I loved this book, as I did the series. As a child and as an adult, one of my favorite themes is how a character is challenged in terms of physical survival. In her semi-autobiographical series, Laura Ingalls Wilder includes a great deal of detail about how the Wilder family sought to survive in the big woods: how they built their house, kept themselves warm, found things to eat, made things to play with. All of the characters are realistic and engaging; interestingly, the writer does not leave out certain details about the family that might be considered too sophisticated for small children, i.e. that Laura's father did not like to live anywhere that was more settled than a small town, and that when a large town grew up around them, they had to move on. In other words, the book is suitable for small children, yet it is realistic. I think that might be one reason why children love it so.Read full review
This is a classic, of course. It was read aloud at nap time by my first-grade reacher, and I have loved it ever since (decades and decades!) The book itself was in perfect condition.
