Christopher Buckley's novel, "Little Green Men," is a fast-paced political satire about aliens, UFO's, and how people come to believe in them. Set on the landscape of Washington, D.C., the book deals with the question of alien abduction and postulates that the United States government may have developed the ultimate plan to insure military and space funding. Unfortunately for Washington-based protagonist, John O. Banion- acerbic journalist, talk-show host, and D.C. insider- the capitol is also the headquarters for MJ-12- Majestic 12- a secret federal program. Based on a real-life program of the same name, MJ-12, stages alien abductions to maintain popular support for military spending and space exploration. Nathan Scrubbs, an MJ-12 operative, is fed up with participating in alien abductions and when his request for a transfer is denied, he gets drunk and decides to take it out on Banion. Following the television pundit's two probings by "aliens"- yes, it is what you think- he becomes a UFO believer and is ostracized by the D.C. establishment. As Banion's obsession increases, he writes op-ed pieces and uses his television show to organize millions of UFO cultists- "Millennium Men"- who gather on the Mall for a "Millennium Man March." When the president becomes involved and Banion warns that a NASA launch is going to be thwarted by aliens, the hilarity increases exponentially. "Little Green Men" is consistently funny, although the novel is so thick with one-liners, it sometimes resembles a stand-up comedy routine. Buckley lampoons the Washington establishment from FBI men to Larry King to the numerous gatherings that have become commonplace on the Mall. His plotting and well-sketched characters nicely advance the story line. The book's climax and resolution come in rapid fire succession, making some of the subplots feel unresolved. "Little Green Men" delivers the irreverent humor Buckley's fans have come to expect. The book is a great airplane or beach read.Read full review
