This is the best kept secret of the old WRT54G series. You can install a modern version of the Tomato Shibby firmware with this hardware without losing features - something the WRT54GL and older WRT54G series can't do. I'm just thrilled with the purchase. Even though it's only wireless G - the stability and range (especially if you add larger antennas) are fantastic.

For advanced users: The WRT54G-TM is in my opinion the best platform for running DDWRT. With DDWRT it can be configured as a repeater, an AP, a router/gateway, VPN, there are really too many features to list here. If you plan on having large amounts of traffic on your network the 32MB of ram is a great feature vs. the 8 or 16MB of most other WRT series routers. Also with a large 8MB flash memory you have plenty of space for flashing any compatible firmware you can find. The 200mhz chip can be overclocked, though I have not done so, nor have I felt the need to do so as it is always responsive. I would recommend this for small business networks or advanced home networks. I now own 3 TMs and maintain a network with on average between 10 and 25 wireless clients (I sell internet access in my apartment complex). For the average user: You will notice much less slow down when multiple users are connected to the internet. This is thanks to the extra ram. Just like in your computer, more ram will equal to better multitasking. The reason this has so much more RAM is simple, it was designed for T-Mobile Hotspot service. Though it is not required you have T-Mobile to use the router for networking. Though the wireless is 802.11G which tops out at 54 MB/s this will make little difference if you are only surfing the web or playing games. Your actual internet connection is likely much slower than 54MB/s, an average range for internet connections is around 6-11MB/s. The setup process is fairly simple, but some computer knowledge will help. With the included software you should have no problems. Overall I recommend this product to anyone in need of a router. Whether you need the T-Mobile Hotspot service or not it's a strong choice.Read full review
So when I got the chance, I dove into converting my own router. After a relatively simple firmware upgrade, you can boost your wireless signal, prioritize what programs get your precious bandwidth, and do lots of other simple or potentially much more complicated things to improve your computing experience. The best feature is the that you can use open source DD-WRT Mega firmware. You need to read all the steps necessary, so you don't end up turning your new router into a brick. You can turn a $40 to $70 router into a $600 router. No it's not an N router but after you upgrade this router it is very stable and easy to use. Or you can buy it already upgraded from one of many on E-bay. Good Luck.
I bought the WRT54G-TM knowing what to do with it: flash it with non-stock firmware. While a warranty voider right there, with the stock firmware this router is like a turbo engine where you just use it to cruise lightly around the block. While not the newest Gigabit or Wireless-N device, for those of us who do not need such features, this device is a wise decision. I unleashed the monster and put DD-WRT in it and I don't regret it one bit. Plenty of room for extra features and works like a charm. OpenWRT is also possible on it, and I am inclined, since I think that "set it for what you use it" is the best and knowing Linux commandline this would be natural for me. This device gives me the leverage to do so and then some. Without configuring any settings other than passwords, IP ranges for LAN and wireless SSID and password, I was able to get better speeds than my previous router, an extra 6mbps which I can now use for more things.Read full review
These routers, the WRT54G-TM's, are the best routers available for your home. You might say "Why would i want that T-Mobile crap on my wireless router, i don't even use T-Mobile." The answer is simple: build quality. While you may not be able to tell the difference between these routers, and your everyday WRT54G, there is a HUGE difference on the inside. The WRT54G-TM is built with 32 MB of RAM inside to buffer your traffic going out to the Internet. The WRT54G v8 router has a lowly 8 MB of RAM. So what's the difference? Speed. Stability. A user of a TM could easily open 25 random browser windows simultaneously, while a v8 user would likely crash their router with 10. (Owning both, i can assure you this is the case.) Technology enthusiasts love the TM. It is one of the best routers for the DD-WRT project. DD-wRT allows users to truly get the most from their routers. As we speak, my TM's are maintaining secure tunnels to remote networks via OpenVPN. This tunnel allows me to remotely manage my family's PC's, transfer files, even install printers on other networks.... All from a 50 dollar router! The choise is clear. Power, Stability, Performance, and Flexibility, the TM has it all. Perfect for any home user.Read full review
