This is a great book for low key portrait photography. Many techques about lighting, dressing and posing are very useful. More importantly, the author introduces these techniques from the angle of art -- what things make an art work outstanding, different from oridinary good photoes. If your are a porfessional portrait photographer, go for it and you will not be wrong. For amateurs like me, I think it's a little bit too "deep", and the requirement for equipments is a little too high -- and the author didn't name any replacement with cheaper or home-mading things. I guess the author didn't write this book for these readers. But if you understands the principles used by the author, you can purchase much cheaper equipments and home-make something if necessary to try -- At least you can shoot some really nice pictures, much better than Wal-mart stidio and good enough to surprise your wife (or husband) and friends. -- Qing Chang, Champaign, IllinoisRead full review
I bought this book and the "High Key" book he put out because my daughter's communion is coming up and I wanted some lighting techniques I could use at home and in the church.I have two off camera wireless flash units. Only 7 pages discuss ratios of lights and metering (Chapters 14 Ratios (4pages) & 15 metering & exposure(3 pages)), the rest of the book is about choosing backrounds, clothes, poses, props and composition of portraits. This book is really for pros that have their own studio. The last few pages show examples of the types of studio lights used to create the photos in the book. This is a great book on portraiture techniques but not really for someone trying to learn how to use multiple flashes for the first time. I'm starting the High Key book today.
