I've been an I.T. Technician for 15 years and I have worked extensively with all three big brands of business laptops. With that said, this is the third ThinkPad that I have owned and I love it. I bought this to replace a six year old T400 (which still runs great). I’m running Win 7 Pro 64 bit , I have upgraded the hard drive to solid state and the RAM to 16 GB. I’ve had it for 3 months and so far no issues. Feel and Build: Make no mistake this is a business laptop, it’s not the lightest and certainly not the prettiest but it is well built and feels like it. I find that the 14” size it’s small enough to set on my lap while watching TV and surfing the net but also large enough for photo editing at a desk for hours on end. The chassis is sturdy and the keyboard has firm feel without being overly loud. Unfortunately this was the last year that Lenovo used this style of keyboard in the 400 series. Performance: Aside from 3D CAD or some high end gaming , this system is more than capable of handling everything the average user will throw at it. I do a lot of high resolution photo editing and it doesn’t flinch. Battery Life: With a solid state HDD I'm getting approximately 2-3 hours from a used 6 cell battery and 5-7 hours with a fairly new 9 cell. (Expect shorter times if you are using a traditional mechanical hard drive). Display: The display is nice and bright with good color reproduction and excellent resolution (1600x900). The vertical viewing angle could be a bit wider, as I find myself adjusting the screen angle a little more than with other laptops. When buying, be aware that some T420 have a lower resolution screen (1366x768). Pros: ThinkPad build quality. Screen resolution. Value. Cons: The DVD eject button is very easy to accidentally press while picking up the laptop. The screen latch is on the chassis instead of the lid like older models. This makes opening the lid with one hand difficult. No webcam. Conclusion: If you looking for a solid and reliable performer the T420 is still a great choice.Read full review

The laptop is in good conditions, but the battery is not good as it can be. I would prefer to pay a little bit more for a long life battery, but theyvdont give options. I give a 3 star for the battery

I really needed a new computer because my 5 year old 17" laptop was getting closer and closer to death. I did not have the money for a brand new computer so I took a chance on this refurbished 14" Lenovo Thinkpad T420. I had never had a Lenovo but heard about it's reputation for being a solid workhorse, especially the T420. I have had this computer for about 4 months now and I am very pleased that I purchased it. It is solidly made and a true workhorse. Even though I was initially reluctant to go from 17" to 14" the transition has been painless. I find the screen on the Lenovo to be more than sufficient for my needs. The only negative thing that I have to say about this computer is that the keyboard is very sensitive and quirky. You have to be very watchful while typing because every so often the cursor will jump from where you are to somewhere completely different in the paragraph you are typing. Very touchy. I think it has to do with the pressure of your keystrokes. You must always be sure to look up at the screen on a regular basis and proof read whatever you write. Sometimes it seems to be acting dyslectic as I am typing, but it could be because I am having to be so aware of my keystroke pressure that I am losing focus and mistyping my words. I used to be a much better speller. As I have been typing this review, I've had to stop and edit a number of times. This could be a problem for many but I am learning to deal with it because I really like everything else about this Lenovo, and I got a great deal because it is "refurbished", and I think it's worth it. I haven't mentioned battery life because the battery that came with it was on it's last legs and I haven't replaced it because I use a hard wire connection to the net.Read full review

I'm a PC gaming enthusiast, as such I never really used a laptop for anything more than browsing the net or doing some light shopping. Recently my 5 year old laptop died, because my year old daughter yanked it off the table. I was looking for a good business laptop, one that was still quite useful and not to old, I then came across this Lenovo T420. Now, it was my understanding the Thinkpad series has dropped in quality since IBM sold it. But, I have NEVER seen a laptop that is as upgradable as this thing is. The processor is socketed, the ram is easily accessible, the DVD drive and HDD caddy's are both accessible with a simple switch flick. I upgraded the HDD to a solid state drive, installed windows 7, upgraded it to windows 10 and went on my way. This little work horse still has a few years in 'em AS-IS, but the fact I can upgrade the ram again, and the processor gives me hope that I can get at least 10 out of this thing. For giggles I loaded up Steam, Fallout 3 plays great after some tweaks, and I was able to run a few less intensive games as well, so I got a bonus entry level casual gaming laptop when I bought a business work horse. If you're looking for a workhorse for school or work, pick one of these up. Also, if you're looking for something that can take a beating, this thing has a built in roll cage for impact protection. Some models also include a switching dual graphics card option. The hardware is also compatible with certain un-approved operating systems from a certain fruit bearing company. Windows 10 runs great, and Lenovo has a huge tract record in the Linux community as well. You cannot go wrong with this laptop, even if it is currently pushing 5 years old.Read full review

The best laptop I have ever owned. I found many are still under warranty which means you can get the Factory Preload DVDs free from Lenovo. If it has the orgional Lenovo preload, it will include Windows Word and Excell Starter edition built in that I found just as good as having Windows Office for most users...you can't get that anymore. Recommend the 1600x900 screen resolution...many have lower resolution. Also recommend one with the Lenovo Factory Preload still installed since you get Partition Q with Lenovo Reccue and Recovery option to restore to factory condition. But if you can't get the Lenovo preload, get one under warranty so you can reload it to factory oondition. One additional item: the removable CD/DVD bay alows you to install a second HD thats excellent for backups (adapter is very cheap on Ebay) Also, the mini Dock can be bought on Ebay for around $40...get the one with the speaker/headset output on the back.Read full review
