Ledger 1784 Culpeper Virginia Revolutionary War Plank Germanna Mills
George Stubblefield Charles Bruce Burgess Ball Henry Lee
This is a wonderful original piece of Virginia history.  It is an early ledger from the Culpeper/Orange area from 1784 to 1787.  It belonged to either Charles Bruce or Burgess Ball, both officers in the Revolutionary War and both mentioned several times in the ledger.  It is all handwritten and over 130 pages long.  There is a great Section in the back for Plank sold in town from Germanna Mills from Captain Charles Bruce and George Stubblefield both well-known officers during the Revolutionary War.  There are 9 pages dedicated to the mills in the back but there are other entries related to plank including sales to General George Weedon, who served under George Washington  in the French and Indian War and then as an officer during the Revolutionary War.   There is also an entry for Henry Lee Jr, the father of Henry Light Horse Harry Lee.
The rest of the ledger seems to be from a general store selling wheat, sugar, coffee, molasses, paper pins, shoe buckles, buttons, hinges and other similarly items denominated in pounds.  Col. Burges Ball of Loudoun County, in Virginia, who married Frances Washington (1763-1815) in 1781. Ball’s wife, Frances Washington, was the daughter of George Washington’s brother Charles Washington, making Burges Ball George Washington’s nephew in law. Burges Ball began the Revolutionary War as a Captain and rose to the rank of Lt.-Colonel. After the war, Burges Ball ran into financial problems largely as a result of lavish entertaining of guests at his home, Traveler’s Rest, in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, and moved back to Loudoun in 1795.
