This is the largest Intact Deadeye I have seen in my 25yrs of collecting. It is just over 7 inches across and 5" wide. The pictures #9 and #10 show the beautiful growth rings -and just above center on both sides you can see the center rings of the tree it was cut from. Deadeyes were used on many types of older ships, of which many were made and sailed from this rich maritime community. This find is just another example of some of the long lost treasures that still turn up here in New England. The deadeye will present well, as one face is in great condition, the other side has a ding in it and some faint red stain that dripped in years ago. All and all a wonderful and exceptionally large historic artifact. |
