Overall a good way to sharpen knives quickly and easily, but the quality is a bit less than I expected. I actually ordered 2 turn box sharpeners (one ceramic and one diamond) and both had slight defects in the holes for the rods. On one the holes are drilled a bit off-center, and on both the holes had to be cleaned to allow the rods to seat fully. Also the diamond rods are not evenly coated with part of the rod having a very light (almost none) coating of diamonds. They still work if you pay careful attention and get the area the blade contacts aligned so the diamond coating is present, but it's not a simple "insert the rods and sharpen" procedure. I was able to quickly sharpen some of my very dull kitchen knives (knives my wife abuses) quickly and easily, and the fine ceramic rods are great for touching up the edge on knives that are already sharp. (my knife sharpening policy is - the easiest way to sharpen a knife is to keep it sharp!)Read full review

I have never been a great knife sharpener. I have tried several different methods and I get close but not what I would like. With this system, I used the course rods to make the profile I wanted and then I polished it up on the fine grade rods. The final step was to use a strop to give it that fine edge. I think for beginners and folks like me who can't sharpen, it's one of the best systems I've found.

I originally started using ceramic stick sharpeners 20 yars ago. Before, I struggled putting a decent edge on anything. Since then, following the instructions I found it easy an effortless to edge a knife. It does take longer if the knife was poorly maintained or abused. I put edges now that I can shave hair on my arms. The self storing box is also a plus. It works well on most knife lengths including my 11 inch fish filet knife. You will also need to purchase a ceramic cleaning eraser. This removes the metal from the stick and minimizes sharpening time.

A must for everyone who likes a sharp knife. Very compact and well made. Once you get used to this type of sharpener you stay with it forever.

The Lansky rods do a very good job of sharpening most metals, and make it relatively easy to hold the blade at the correct angle. Hit the blade a few stokes on the back of a leather belt after the rods, and your knives will be plenty sharp.
