A PRACTICAL TRETISE ON THE DISEASES OF WOMEN This auction is for an original 1887 edition of "A PRACTICAL TREATISE ON THE DISEASES OF WOMEN" by John M. Scudder, M.D., published by the author, of Cincinnati. Dr. Scudder's whole strength and soul was thrown into his chosen work. This volume is composed by John M. Scudder, M.D. The history of American Gynecology's emergence as a specialty in the second half of the 19TH century is characterized by the interaction of numerous, enthusiastic, innovative and forward thinking medical practitioners from across the United States. The accomplishments of Dr. J. Marion Simms who is the "Father of Gynecology" should not be overlooked, however, equal acknowledgement should be given to those other pioneers such as Dr. John M. Scudder, who, deserved this honor as not only did he offer much in the specific technical contributions but also for his leadership position and influence on the medical, surgical and social humanitarian aspects of gynecological practice.
John M. Scudder (1829-1894) was an American gynecologist. He was a Professor of the Theory and Practice of Medicine in the Eclectic Medical Institute Cincinnati. Eclectic medicine was a branch of American medicine which made use of botanical remedies along with other substances and physical therapy practices, popular in the latter half of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. In conjunction with his college duties, Dr. Scudder at once entered into practice in that old portion of Cincinnati known as Fulton. His success, both as a practitioner and money-maker, was phenomenal. He formed partnerships in order to handle the immense business; Dr. O. E. Newton being the most noteworthy of his partners. At one time his office was crowded with patients and the income from practice ran into the three tens, but love of his school overreached his love of riches, and he relinquished this lucrative practice with its golden opportunities for the perilous task of leadership in a hazardous effort to strengthen a tottering institution. His whole attention was now given to his alma mater, the Eclectic Medical Institute, which he meant to save and place upon a par with the best medical colleges of the world. How well he succeeded is now a part of history. With the shrewd and discerning eye of the business man and with unselfish devotion to his profession he quickly saw in the financial mismanagement of the college and the internecine strife in the Faculty a wreck ahead for Eclecticism. He threw himself into the breach, took charge of the college and the Journal, and though the Civil War was coming on and decimating the ranks of the students he successfully guided the well-nigh sinking craft through perilous waters and brought her ashore unscathed and without dishonor. From the time he grasped the helm she has steadily ridden forth, spreading the gospel of Eclecticism in medicine; and from that day until the hour of his death John M. Scudder was, without question, the foremost Eclectic physician of his time. From 1858 to 1860 Dr. Scudder filled the chair of Obstetrics and Diseases of Women and Children, and in 1860 was transferred to the chair of Pathology and Principles and Practice of Medicine, a position he held until 1887, when, failing in health. Dr. Thomas was given that chair and Dr. Jeancon Pathology, while Professor Scudder lectured upon the allied topics of Hygiene, Physical Diagnosis, and Specific Diagnosis until his death in 1894. With equal vigor he shouldered the task of preparing textbooks which should embody living, up-to-date matter. In doing this he shattered some of the cherished idols of the earlier Eclectics who were less progressive and who rested content upon the pioneer methods and publications. His first edition book came out in 1858 and bore the title of "A Practical Treatise on Diseases of Women." This 1887 edition is the fourteenth edition, thoroughly revised! In preparation of this work, the author deemed necessary changes throughout these editions since it's original publication. The revelations of disclosure thus far was the "departure from the ordinary practice, especially in displacements of the uterus, wholly discarding pessaries. Time has proven the truth of these views, and a large number of the best physicians have adopted them. These editions have been thoroughly revised, especially in the treatments of disease and use of remedies. The truth of "specific medication" through more time indicates more clearly an established selection of remedies in diseases of women. The books written in this era were updated by their foreshadowed information. At that present day, so much attention needed to be applied to diseases of women; especially with so many advances through the years. Just as today, in the 21st Century, the modern advances of today can not compare to the findings over a century ago, however, a start needed to be made and these pioneers have paved the way for the benefits and knowledge we experience today.Preceding 19th Century medicine was greatly credited to the ancient Egyptians. Their knowledge of medicine and science has been especially skillful. There are 15 detailed chapters in this 534 paged volume. The subjects included are fully detailed, accompanied by COLORED PLATES an numerous wood ENGRAVINGS. The topics are as follows: ANATOMY OF THE FEMALE ORGANS OF GENERATION ~~~~~~ PATHOLOGY AND DIAGNOSIS DISEASES OF THE EXTERNAL ORGANS OF GENERATION DISEASES OF THE URETHRA DISEASES OF THE VAGINA LACERATION, OR RUPTURE OF THE PERINEUM PELVIC CELLULITIS VENEREAL DISEASES DISEASES OF THE UTERUS ~~~~~ HYSTERALGIA OR NEURALGIA OF THE UTERUS DISEASES OF THE FALLOPIAN TUBES AND OVARIES PUERPERAL FEVER FUNCTIONAL DISEASES DISEASES OF THE BREASTS ~~~~~~~~~
