Mathilda, a twelve-year old New York girl, is living an undesirable life among her half-family. Her father stores drugs for two-faced cop Norman Stansfield. Only her little brother keeps Mathilda from breaking apart. One day, Stansfield and his team take cruel revenge on her father for stretching the drugs a little, thus killing the whole family. Only Mathilda, who was out shopping, survives by finding shelter in Léon's apartment in the moment of highest need. Soon, she finds out about the strange neighbour's unusual profession, killing and desperately seeks his help in taking revenge for her little brother. Léon, who is completely unexperienced in fatherly tasks, and in friendships, does his best to keep Mathilda out of trouble unsuccessfully. Now, the conflict between a killer, who slowly discovers his abilities to live, to feel, to love and a corrupt police officer, who does anything in his might to get rid of an eye witness, arises to unmeasurable proportions - all for the sake of a little twelve-year old girl, who has nearly nothing to lose. Luc Besson's movie Léon "The Professional" gives a intense story which is maximized in potential by the casting of the movie done by Todd Thaler. Every aspect of the movie delivers and makes an impressive overall package. A gripping story with well-crafted characters.Read full review

The three main characters make this movie. Danny Oldman is the best "bad guy" the world has ever seen, in my humble opinion. He was as incredible in "Romeo is bleeding", as well... and so good in the the ending scenes, that I bought this movie so that I could see that ending whenever I wanted. Jean Reno always turns in a wonderful performance in his charater, regardless of the movie. Natalie Portman is totally incredible, not only in this movie, but in her more recent works. Able to flush her face for a moments need,as does Meg Ryan. The three perfect people for a perfect movie. I have seen this movie several times I while am not all that thrilled with the shoot em up, blow em um movies made in theis day and age, this movie combines the perfect talent with the great story line, absent half the town being destroyed in antics that are no at all realistic. Sequel? LArry (494466)Read full review
Jean Reno in the genre character that made him famous, a hitman. Reno plays a fairly simple man who kill's people for a living. One day a crooked drug's cop kills Leon's neighbours, but one daughter Mathilda whom Reno takes in. She wants revenge and so Leon teach's her his craft, which involves killing those who murdered her family. Tender moments between Leon and Mathilda, as he learn's to love Mathilda as a daughter. Portman's performance as Mathilda is outstanding as she gets under the skin of the crooked cop. Violence, blood, in scenes that will make your heart stop make this an R rated movie, but well worth watching.
Goes to show that even a hit man has to have a code of ethics. Being an assassin doesn't mean just kill willynilly. At least, not Leon, highly trained, very professional about how he conducts business, keeping low key in how he lives until a neighbor downstairs gets his comeuppance due to his involvement in the dope game...and loses everything he has, including his family and his life. Only his 12 year daughter was out running an errand, only to witness as the killers leave. That's when Leon gets involved. That's when it starts to get interesting!! No spoiler alerts here...must see for one's self. Highly recommended. Love this film!
