We’re Stereo Exchange, located in New York City. We've been in business since the 1970s and are a major high-end dealer. We have all the current top brands on display in our huge showroom.
FOR SALE: One used Krell FPB300 Powerhouse Two-Channel Power Amp. This amplifier is used.
It in very nice shape, and has worked beautifully for the previous owner.
I tried it in my own system and heard what I was told to expect…an amazingly warm, smooth sound with, seemingly, no end in the available power and dynamics.
This amp is special.
It not only sounds spectacular, but it has all the power anyone could need to get the best out of virtually any speaker that has ever been made.
It has an unusual power supply with complete voltage regulation, meaning that it has, in effect, a built-in super-high-power power conditioner. It will sound great even on “dirty” AC power lines that hurt the sound of lesser amps.
I have never seen an amp with this feature before.
It does make the amp run hot, so please give it plenty of ventilation!
This was a $9,000.00 power amp when new, and that was around 1996. Today it would probably cost more like $12,000+.
It pumps out 300 Watts per channel into 8-Ohms, and 600 Watts per channel into 4-Ohms.
Most of today’s better loudspeakers dip down to WAY below 8-Ohms.
High performance speakers, especially the ones with the tweeter on top, are often rated for 8-Ohms but may go down to the 3-Ohm range at certain bass frequencies. The reason is simple.
Today, few of us want wide-front speakers with 15-inch woofers. Current trends call for speakers to have a slimmer design.
So most speaker companies have switched from one large, to two or three smaller woofers.
These smaller woofers still cannot, even in “threes”, move as much air. Let’s do the math. If you have a speaker with multiple small woofers, and you want to know the equal surface area in one big woofer, here is what you do…
Take the square root of the number of drivers and multiply that by the diameter of each. The result is the same surface area in one big woofer!
If a 12-inch woofer is big enough to get very powerful bass (it can be if well designed) and you replace it with THREE 6” woofers, let’s see if that’s the same.
We take the square root of THREE and multiply it by SIX. That’s 1.732x6=10.4”. Yes, that’s right… THREE six-inch woofers isn’t even the same as one 11” woofer.
Even if it was, the smaller cones will not be able (in most cases) to move as far. So, if they move only two-thirds as far, we need to take 10.4 and multiply it by .666, which is 6.9 inches!!!
Obviously, if speaker designers want to get good bass out of smaller woofers, they need to have a few tricks up their sleeve.
Great computer-aided design helps. Powerful magnets help. But one great way to get more bass out of a smaller woofer is to make the speaker dip in impedance. In that way, the speaker pulls more current from the amp, and the amp’s power goes up. This means more bass delivery.
We now make the amp work harder to help the speaker sound bigger than it is. That’s fine IF AND ONLY IF THE AMP HAS THE EXTRA CURRENT AVAILABLE.
In the case of this amp, the power truly doubles into 4-Ohms to 600 Watts per channel.
It even gets better.
This amplifier is rated for a whopping 1200 Watts per channel into 2-Ohms!
This amp has low noise, since it is balanced from input to output.
Neither speaker terminal is grounded, so noise can’t interfere with the music…it’s all cancelled.
This amplifier also has a very sophisticated bias circuit that gives you all the sonic smoothness to high frequencies of a CLASS-A amp, but without as much heat, and a LOT more power.
The amp has great speaker terminals and both Balanced and Unbalanced inputs.
Since this is a fully balanced amp, using the balanced inputs will yield the best sound.
If you intend to use the unbalanced (RCA jack) inputs, you will need to order two small (and inexpensive) “jumpers” to go into the XLR jacks to prevent the possibility of noise. Not a big deal, but I wanted you to know that up front. I suspect they will cost under $10.00.
The amp has a main power switch on the rear panel. Unless you go away for a long time, leave it on so the amp stays in standby.
The power switch you will use all the time is on the front. The POWER LED will always be on when the rear panel switch is ON.
When you press the button on the front, a moment later, the REGULATOR LED will light. Then the BIAS LED come on and beautiful music emerges. It’s all very comforting to know that this microprocessor-controlled amp checks itself every time it’s turned on.
The amplifier will come with a power cord (probably not the original) and the owner’s manual and an original FPB amplifier brochure.
VISUAL CONDITION: Really nice, with no significant blemishes. The faceplate has a couple of MINUTE nicks that don’t show up in the photos. They are TINY. I would rate the amp an A, visually, just not quite an A+.
PRICING: We are setting the RESERVE at a low $2488.00.
That makes this amplifier, depending on where the bidding takes it to, one of the biggest bargains we have ever offered on Ebay.
PACKING: The amp will be placed in a double-walled cardboard box with padding around it. That box will be placed in another double-walled cardboard box with padding between the two boxes. We know you want the amp to arrive safely, as so do we.
SHIPPING: We will NOT be sending the amplifier by UPS Ground. It’s too heavy, at about 140 pounds packed, and that method is not safe.
We will be sending it by a freight company, insured.
SHIPPING COST: I’m sorry, but we cannot get you a shipping quote. These freight companies start hanging up on us after the third call, and I could, otherwise, get 5-6 requests PER DAY for shipping quotes.
Please know that shipping will be at least $100 even if you live nearby, and could run as much as, say $350 if you live across the country.
You will pay what we pay for the shipping, plus $80 to cover time and materials to pack the amp very, very well.
We will get you that price within three days from the close of the auction.
