Item specifics

Brand:

Kay

This is a late 50's or (more likely) early 60's Kay Swingmaster. It has the desirable pickups that go by many names: Barney Kessel, Tissue box, Kleenex Box, P35, K, and whatever else. They are like a P90 but are hotter. A lot of people say they were likely made or supplied by Gibson. I believe these particular pickups measure in the 11-12k ohm range, and I'll gladly measure them again if someone wants more specifics. It's a really great sounding guitar, and quite versatile as well.
It all works, and has had a good amount of work done to make it a player (mostly setup-related). I used it lovingly on several gigs. Frets have been recently dressed, and they are relatively low frets. They probably were never very high to begin with. It has a bone nut. I was told the tuners were not original (but if so they match the old pics pretty well except for the fact they're not open back). The knobs are not original. Right now it has an old tailpiece installed that came with it that I thought might be the original, but I was told that it likely was not. It is set up with a wooden neck shim in the pocket so it can properly be set up with a bigsby and still have enough string tension and angle to make it work properly and sound it's best. The pickup height is also adjusted accordingly. If for some reason a person wanted the shim removed and it re-setup that way I can do that as well. The bridge wasn't original when I acquired it so I replaced it with a roller bridge (tune-o-matic style). The neck has a good size and depth but the spacing at the nut is on the narrow side. The tuners look original as far as I can tell. The finish is nicely checked. Feel free to ask any other questions.

I would rather not get rid of this guitar but hard times call for it so it needs to go and it's priced to sell. Good luck!
