Japanese Traditional Boys Day: 'Koinobori' Noren: Hand Made In Kyoto

Finest Quality 100% Linen 79X120cm (31"X47⅓")

'Koinobori': For Boys Day

May 5th...

Note as these sometimes sell out seasonally, please forgive us if it suddenly becomes unavailable…

This striking Noren is of the finest quality that money can buy and is usually available only in exclusive shops in Kyoto. Made by the renown 'Rakushian' of Kyoto, it is hand made and dyed by skilled artisans using age-old technics.

It measures: 79 cm wide and 120 cm long (31" X 47⅓") and is split in the centre and into 2 separate panels.

The material is natural, hand loomed linen of the finest quality in sky blue tones. The motif is of several 'Koinobori' Carp Streamers, blowing in the wind above the clouds.

There is a small seal of the maker in the lower right panel. It has loops at the top for stringing it on a stick or bamboo pole above the doorway. It may also be hung on a wall as a tapestry.

These noren are artistic masterpieces and will add a dramatic touch to any room where they are displayed. Guaranteed to impress guests!

Shipping is quoted at the EMS rate and is fully insured. Allow 10 days before shipping.

Koinobori (鯉幟), meaning "carp streamer" in Japanese, are carp-shaped wind socks traditionally flown in Japan to celebrate Tango no Sekku (端午の節句), a traditional calendrical event which is now designated a national holiday; Chilren's Day. These wind socks are made by drawing carp patterns on paper, cloth or other nonwoven fabric. They are then allowed to flutter in the wind. They are also known as satsuki-nobori (皐幟).

Children's Day takes place on May 5. Landscapes across Japan are decorated with koinobori from April to early May, in honor of sons and in the hope that they will grow up healthy and strong....

What are Noren?

Noren (暖簾) are traditional Japanese fabric dividers, hung between rooms, on walls, in doorways, or in windows. They usually have one or more vertical slits cut from the bottom to nearly the top of the fabric, allowing for easier passage or viewing. Noren are rectangular and come in many different materials, sizes, colors, and patterns. They are sometimes changed seasonally to celebrate the cherry blossoms or other holidays and traditional events.

Noren are traditionally used by shops and restaurants as a means of protection from sun, wind, and dust, and for advertising space.[citation needed] Sentō (commercial bathhouses) also place noren across their entrances, typically blue in color for men and red for women with the kanji (yu, lit. hot water) or the corresponding hiragana . They are also hung in the front entrance to a shop to signify that the establishment is open for business, and they are always taken down at the end of the business day.

IMPORTANT SHIPPING NOTE: Most items include TWO shipping rates: 1) EMS is the higher option and is fully insured, includes a tracking number and the transit time is much faster - delivery is within 7 days of shipping in most cases. We need your TELEPHONE NUMBER so they can contact you for delivery. The TRACKING NUMBER is in your FEEDBACK as of the day of shipping - please TRACK your item to be sure it is not returned to us. If you are not home, they usually leave an 'Attempted Delivery' note but will return it to us as 'unclaimed' if you do not contact them within about a week. 2) STANDARD AIRMAIL is the lower one is and is fine for most inexpensive items to countries with TRUSTWORTHY postal systems but as it does NOT include TRACKING, we have NO WAY of locating the item's whereabouts or of influencing the post office to deliver it once it leaves Japan. The usual delivery time is about 10 days to 2 weeks but it has been known to take up to 6 weeks - especially to Spain. Selecting this option means that you understand that it's safe, speedy delivery is at YOUR risk. We recommend EMS! Some items are cheaper when shipped together - If you wish us to calculate the exact rate, just hit: REQUEST TOTAL and we will make the invoice for you. We ship in large batches and pick-up is arranged with the Post Office about twice a week. Your item goes in the first shipment after it is in stock, packed and ready to go. This is usually VERY FAST, however large, multiple item orders can take longer to prepare. If you have a DEADLINE, please contact us PRIOR TO PURCHASING the item to ask if it is possible. EMS Service is a POSTAL service - not a SELLER Service, meaning that it will speed up TRANSIT TIME but not necessarily the DEPARTURE DATE. ALL items are shipped when they are ready and as quickly as we can manage! • BE SURE TO CHECK OUR EBAY STORE ON A REGULAR BASIS FOR MORE TRADITIONAL JAPANESE ITEMS FROM THE ANCIENT CAPITAL OF KYOTO, JAPAN!
Payment is by PAYPAL ONLY. Shipping is quite reasonable for small items and we usually ship within a few days of receiving your payment. In most cases, you can expect delivery very quickly. NOTE: the actual delivery time however depends on the Post Office in your country and we have no control over it.
