Description
This is a Japanese Handmade clay tempered Carbon Steel Samurai Tanto. The blade has been constructed from clay tempered 1095 carbon steel and features a distinct Nami style hamon.  The blade comes full tang and sharpened. The tsuka and sheath is wooden with hand crafted brass ornaments.

It is sharpened and polished by our 12 stage traditional process work. The Tanto is full tang, secured by a bamboo mekugi pins and comes razor sharp.

Our factory has used only traditional materials for our Japanese sword's fittings. The Tsuba (guard), Fuchi (collar), and Kashira (pommel), are expertly made and finely crafted in golden brass. A beautiful Menuki (a small ornamental sculpture inserted between the ray skin and the cord wrappings on the handle) enhances the sword's aesthetic appearance and makes for a sword that is as traditional looking as we can possibly make it. All feature fully sharpened 1095 carbon steel blades. The blade surface is then given a careful polish by hand, with a distinctive mirror polish applied to the body. The black lacquered saya are decorated with handmade golden brass fittings.

How important is differential hardening?

A differentially hardened katana (as opposed case hardened or tempered) has a hardened edge and a soft spine.  The edge is hardened so it will retain a razor sharp edge while the spine is left softer so it will bend and not break.  This is usually done with a traditional clay coating tempering process. Differential hardening is key to making a battle ready katana that will be used for extensive tameshigiri (test cutting).  Our expectation is that a shinken should survive at least 10,000 tatami omote cuts (10 years of heavy use) and only need minor sharpening after every 500 (six months of heavy use).
