This is my fourth Joy of Cooking. It's a complete how to, from Table Setting to delicious meals, cuts of meat, etc. I'm 79 years old I've gotten full use of previous copies, until they fell apart! I've given Joy to my daughters, granddaughters as Wedding gifts!!

This book has a wide variety of recipes and is great for both the beginning cook as well as an experienced cook who wants to expand his/her talents. I love how the book is arranged and how vast the recipe selection is. I grew up with this book and finally got myself a copy so I don't have to call my dad to get recipes from the book. Much more convenient than guessing if an online recipe will work, and very easy to use index. My only complaint--the font is very small--how else could you get this many recipes into one cookbook!?!
The 1975 revision of "The Joy of Cooking" is the version most of us late baby boomers grew up with. Frankly, I had no idea there were different "versions" of the same book. I, like many others, assumed that they just added a few things here or there, tweaked a couple of recipes, and that was it. Boy were we wrong! After many years living at home and then many years in a marriage, I found myself single and in need of a cookbook. Well, I went out and bought the first book that came to mind-The Joy of Cooking. I discovered that I had the dreaded 1997 edition. I didn't know there was trouble in the kitchen till Christmas came and I wanted to make "worms," or Almond Crescents as they were known. I scoured the tome under "cookies" and "almonds" and "Christmas" (I think I even looked under "worms"). They weren't in there. How could these 1997 buffoons remove one of my treasured childhood memories? Well, after a bit of research, I discovered that we must have had the 1963 or 1975 edition and frankly the book I grew up with didn't look all that worn so I figured it must have been the '75. I looked in used book shops but apparently no one gives up their '75 so eBay was my logical next choice. Found 10 or 12 copies in about 2 minutes and bid on a few of them. Ironically I ended up with two so I sold the '97 and promptly won third place in a cooking contest for "Dem Bones" - almond crescents reshaped as bones to go along with my Halloween Headhunter costume. Thanks 75 -love ya, mean it! StompyRead full review
This is my favorite cook book. My copy got lost when I moved, much to my dismay. This copy is in near perfect condition, and it’s an old enough edition to have all my favorite recipes. Winner! If you’re a new cook, The Joy of Cooking is for you, because it really explains cuts of meat, use of spices, basic how-tos and more. If you’re an experienced cook, it’s for you, too, with its many recipes for unique and tasty dishes.

Every thing that can be said has been said about The Joy. I bought this for my Nephew because every good cook must have this in their arsenal of cookbooks. This was my first cookbook and is 35 years old. The ribbons are tattered & it is held together with duct tape in places. I believe this is the best first cookbook every made. Mine is so full of notes I could never replace it. I have over 50 cookbooks & this ones has more stains than any other, testifying to it's use.
