Born in Gallipolis, Ohio, in 1950, the work of Jenny Holzer has been shown worldwide in prominent institutions such as the Guggenheim Museum, New York, the American Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, Italy (in 1990, the first woman to represent the United States, she was awarded first prize), the Institute of Contemporary Art London, UK and the Centre Pompidou, Paris, France.
However, the main focus of Jenny Holzer has been on the investigation of means to disseminate her ideas within public space. Since the late seventies, she has been working in the street and in public buildings, using media that would enable her work to blend in the landscape. From LCD displays (e.g., in Times Square, NY) to posters and stickers (applied to such urban elements as telephone booths or parking meters), the texts function as comments on that environment they fit into, stimulating awareness of our social conditioning as conveyed by the very landscape in which we may be confronted by them.
The work of Jenny Holzer, one of the leading artists of her generation, is the subject of a major exhibition co-organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago, IL and the Fondation Beyeler, Basel, Switzerland opening in the Fall of 2008. Holzer, whose career spans thirty years, has consistently and inventively challenged people's assumptions about the world through the use of language that conveys the multiplicity of often contradictory voices, opinions, and attitudes that form the basis of society. Alternating between fact and fiction, public and private, the universal and the particular, Holzer's work offers an incisive social and psychological portrait of contemporary times.
During the past decade, Holzer has shown extensively in Europe but has been seen very little in the United States following a period of wide exposure and pervasive influence beginning in the late 1970s. An expansive presentation at the MCA, centering on her work from the 1990s onward in various media, reintroduces her to the American audience. The exhibition is curated by Elizabeth Smith, James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator and Deputy Director for Programs at the MCA. It will be accompanied by a publication with essays by Smith and other authors and will tour in the US and Europe.
