Resurrecting the Glories of a Bygone Age

Design by Spode for the “Imperial Plate of Persia”, celebrating 2,500 years of the Persian Empire, 1971

Design by Spode for the “Imperial Plate of Persia”, celebrating 2,500 years of the Persian Empire, 1971

The “Imperial Plate of Persia” was designed by Spode for the Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, in 1971, to celebrate 2,500 years of the Persian Empire. Three variants of the bone-china plate were produced –

one of 2,000 for the Shah’s own use (pattern Y8173);

one of 10,000 for distribution to guests at the celebrations (pattern Y8174); and

one of 2,000 to celebrated the Pahlavi dynasty’s 50th anniversary in 1975 (pattern Y8245).

Spode was one of the most renowned manufacturers of chinaware in the world. The company, based in the town of Stoke upon Trent, was founded in 1767 by Josiah Spode I. Spode developed a new formula for bone-china using 40-45% bone-ash in addition to two types of clay, later used by many British pottery companies. Royal patronage assisted in the company’s success following a visit to their London warehouse by Queen Charlotte in 1817. The Royal Warrant from George IV followed in 1820. Although the Spode family sold the company to their retail partners, Copeland and Garrett in 1833, the trade name of Spode was retained for its prestige. The Spode brand is currently owned by Portmeirion Pottery.

The pattern for the Shah’s plates, by the company’s Art Director, Harold Holdway, was designed to link the modern Pahlavi dynasty with the ancient Persian empire of the Achaemenid dynasty. Contrasting with the Pahlavi dynasty’s coat of arms at the plate’s centre were the concave moulding motif, the rosette motif at the outer edge of the plate, and the turquoise colour, reflecting that of the glazed bricks found decorating ceremonial buildings at Susa, one of the empire’s ancient capitals. Further evidence of the Shah’s hankering after the imperial glory of the Achaemenids was the change in the official Iranian calendar in 1976, from the Islamic calendar dating from the Hijra (emigration of the prophet Mohammed from Mecca to Medina), to the “Imperial” calendar dating from the foundation of the Achaemenid dynasty.

But the Shah’s ambitions came to an end only a few years later, in 1979, when he and the security apparatus that had maintained him in power were overthrown by a popular uprising that resulted in the establishment of an Islamic Republic.
