Presented for your consideration is an antique / vintage, Carte de Visite (CDV) - circa 1860s / 1870s - during the American Civil War years or perhaps just postwar - this is an original period item ... featured is an albumen photographic image of a young man ID'd as, "WILL (WILLIAM) BRANCH" ... our dashing and handsome gentleman is the son of BRIGADIER GENERAL LAWRENCE O'BRYAN BRANCH - CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA / CSA who was fatally shot by a Union Sharpshooter at the Battle of Antietam of Sharpsburg, Maryland while he was standing with other Confederate generals ... there is a memorial cannon at the spot where he died ... General Branch had four children: Susan - 'Sue' , William - 'Will', Nancy - 'Nan / Nannie' and Josephine - 'Josie' ... William is photographed here in a fine quality civilian suit and this is the second and final photograph of Will in civilian clothing by the same photographer ... the first previously sold showing a slightly different pose with a dedication to his sister, "JOSIE," handwritten on verso ... our CDV in this auction listing has the advertisement backmark / backstamp of the photographer ... in another previous listing Will posed in his Confederate uniform with one of his sisters, "SUE - SUSAN" ... William left school as a teenager and joined the CSA / Confederate States of America Army and served as a courier for GEN. ROBERT FREDERICK HOKE ... Hoke, having steadily risen through the ranks was a Major General when he surrendered along with Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's army at Bennett Place near Durham, North Carolina and paroled on May 1, 1865 ... he was pardoned by the U.S. government on June 14, 1865 ... William Branch went on to serve in government-elected positions after the war ... please continue reading below for additional information which perhaps applies to young William's service in the Confederate Army ... there are several Confederate / Southern Soldiers with the name, "William Branch," and General Hoke had many promotions in the ranks of the officer's of the South - in addition to involvement with several commands / regiments / brigades

... a very fine Civil War, Confederate Army, CSA, Confederate States of America, Confederacy, South, Southern, Rebel, Historical, History, American History, United States History, Military, Militaria collectible! ... note: the watermark appears only on the scans and not on the actual image ... high contrast views as well as crops and enlargements are provided for better display of the image

Approximate measurements: near 2-1/2" x 4-1/4" ... CDV does not lie completely flat and was trimmed to allow placement into an antique photo album which contained Carte de Visite / CDV and tintype images ... and as always, please read below for further issues / flaws / imperfections to be expected of paper-based items of an antique and used nature and examine the scans carefully as they constitute the primary description!

Back / verso of CDV contains the advertising backmark / backstamp for the ID'd Photographer / Studio, "J. W. WATSON" of RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA (N.C. - NC)

Issues consist of corner and edge wear including rounded and soft bumped corners with creasing at times and / or paper loss ... surface issues such as developing issues, foxing, creases, folds, bends, warps, paper separation, cracks, fading, craquelure, indent marks, rubs, scrapes, scratches, paper pulls, indents including pinhole marks will exist along with soiling / staining and age-discoloration

CONFEDERATE NORTH CAROLINA TROOPS

6th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry
6th Infantry Regiment State Troops was organized at Camp Alamance, near Company Shops (Burlington), North Carolina, in May, 1861. The men were from the counties of Mecklenburg, Orange, Burke, Catawba, McDowell, Mitchell, Yancey, Alamance, Rowan, Wake, Caswell, and Chatham. Ordered to Virginia the unit fought under General B. E. Bee, then spent the summer and winter in the Dumfries area. Its brigadiers / brigadier generals during the conflict were Generals Whiting, Law, Hoke, Godwin, and W. G. Lewis. The 6th was prominent in the campaigns of the army from Seven Pines to Mine Run, then was active in the battles of Plymouth and Cold Harbor. It fought with Early in the Shenandoah Valley and later in the Appomattox operations.
This regiment reported 23 killed and 50 wounded at First Manassas, and in April, 1862, contained 715 effectives. It lost 115 during the Seven Days' Battles, 147 at Second Manassas and Ox Hill, 125 in the Maryland Campaign, and 25 at Fredericksburg. Of the 509 engaged at Gettysburg, thirty-six percent were disabled. At the Rappahannock River in November, 1863, it lost 5 killed, 15 wounded, and 317 missing, and there were 6 killed and 29 wounded at Plymouth. It surrendered with 6 officers and 175 men of which 72 were armed.
The field officers were Colonels Isaac E. Avery, Charles F. Fisher, William D. Pender, and Robert F. Webb; Lieutenant Colonels William T. Dortch, Charles E. Lightfoot, and Samuel M. Tate; and Major Richard W. York.

Like a spirit land of Shadows
They in silence on me gaze
And I feel my heart is beating
With the pulse of other days;
And I ask what great magician
Conjured forms like these afar?
Echo answers, ‘tis the sunshine,
By its alchymist Daguerre.

Caleb Lyon, Photographic Art Journal, 1851
