Seller refurbished to IBM specifications: Screen is bright, fan is quiet, upgraded grade A keyboard and plastics, most scratches and scuffs buffed out, and all components work as originally intended. Grade A overall quality. Excellent working condition.
"Seller refurbished" included over $300 worth of new parts -- 2GB RAM upgrade, upgraded processor (PM770 or 2.13GHz), new fan, upgraded new Samsung 160GB HDD, upgraded DVD/RW multi-burner drive, replacement SXGA+ screen, and new 9-cell battery with over 66Wh life. This will run for some time to come. She is lightning fast and reliable. And, by the way, I have reprogrammed the bios to accept the larger classes of hard drives without complaint and delays during boot-up. The new bios also prevent boot-up delays if more advanced WiFi mini-pci and PC-Express cards are employed, like 802.11n wireless at 300mbs.
What does it mean to be "seller refurbished"? First, every serviceable part is removed, cleaned, inspected, tested, and replaced with either a new or refurbished part if it does not meet spec. The machine is torn down from the base cover to the inside the LCD lid assembly. The fan assembly is nearly always replaced with a new fan. If the palm rest is cracked or dysfunctional, it is replaced. The keyboard is thoroughly cleaned and the keys tested, and buffed to minimize shine or scuffs unless it is replaced. Unless otherwise noted, the keyboard should be new on the high end units or grade A quality on the rest. The screen on all my units is at least super high resolution, and ultra-high on the best offerings. These alone range from $100 to $200 in value if flawless. The lids are coated with a titanium composite, and can easily withstand tremendous abuse. As long as they're not cracked, they're still fully functional. I try to locate the best looking outer covers (including base covers), and they will look as close to new as possible after cleaning, scouring, and buffing. They are replaced if cracked. At least 8 hours of tech labor goes into refurbishing each unit. This does not include the extraordinary software package and custom setup that comes with my units. That alone is worth an order of magnitude more than the sales price.
The main objective is make the machine as reliable as possible and fully functional to IBM specs. You should get a computer that will last for years and provide reliable service.
I assure you, the difference in value is dramatic between "used" and "seller refurbished". You pay for what you get.
This machine is a true workhorse and is virtually indestructible. It will always perform well.
Works fine with an external monitor including 1080p widescreen monitors and TVs, and can also be used as a desktop machine with science monitors for photo and video editing at up to 2048x1536 resolution.
All you need is a printer, carrying case, and a camera/webcam to complete the package.
I offer a 30-day warranty on the system and key components. Battery life is warranted to be at peak performance (>66Wh). Samsung HDD warranty good for one year from the date you receive it from me. Returns at customer expense for shipping. 25% restocking and relisting fee if not DOA. Item is exactly as pictured and as described herein. No returns for minor scuffs, scratches, small visual imperfections, and/or simple software adjustments will be allowed without the restocking fee. Serial numbers for key components are logged in a database to prevent switching parts.
Shipping will be safe and insured by USPS mail to CONUS, service to Canada at extra cost, worldwide shipping also available with special arrangements (see details). Insurance cost included with S&H charges. Please ask for an invoice for multiple unit orders or requests for custom add-ons.
The interesting aspect of many of the eBay reviews is that the only drawback of a T43 is its age. The speed is only slightly slower than the most expensive laptops running Windows 7, but all the new machines are far more expensive, break down very quickly, lack the modularity and extraordinary reliability of the IBM Thinkpad line, and most have no idea what it means to have a "golden triangle" 3:4:5 display at super-high or ultra-high resolution. It's easy on the eyes if you're doing detailed work (especially in science and engineering) it's the only way to enjoy the day without eyestrain and headaches. The T43 was the penultimate machine -- the last of its kind -- the best machine IBM ever built in a notebook. It embodies all the refinements of the greatest laptops in the world.
Please note that in addition to the restoration DVD, which is free with purchase, you may order a docking station with its own separate new genuine Lenovo AC adapter, a restoration hard drive that allows full restoration of this premium custom configuration in three sizes: 40GB, 60GB, or 100GB (7200RPM in the 60 and 100GB sizes). Prices are $30 for the docking station, $75, $100, $120, and $150 for the restoration hard drives. In addition, I have a 1000GB SATA drive and SATA adapter that fits in the ultrabay, for a whopping 1.16 Terabyte total on board capacity for this ultimate machine. That will add another $145. Last but not least, for those who want ultimate WiFi performance with their new 802.11n networks, you can add the Broadcom BCM43222 Mini PCI 802.11 a/b/g/n 300Mbs Wireless N WiFi card instead of the Intel WiFi, which only runs at 54Mbs. This add-on is not available anywhere else without my bios upgrade, and you can add it for only $20 more. Write me a note if you wish to combine any of these items in the purchase. There are no extra shipping charges for these items if purchased with the computer.
Some users will be pleased to know that the unit has been tested in Ubuntu Linux 11.10 and 12.04 and is fully functional. A Linux loading CD may be provided upon request at no extra charge.
It has also come to my attention that Microsoft may cease updates and support fot Windows XP and XP Professional in January. These units all have an XP Pro license (COA). The T43 is certified for use in Windows 7, and does function well according to my testing. If you prefer to preload Windows 7 you must have a valid license.
This turnkey unit is ready to go upon delivery -- WiFi-ready and able to connect to your private network or home system. Any number of these units can be securely networked into a small business office without difficulty.
