Congress had created the Lake Survey within the U.S. Army Topographical Engineers, which later became part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in 1841. Its mission centered on conducting hydrographical surveys of the Northern and Northwestern Lakes and preparing and publishing nautical charts and other navigation aids. In the 1970s it became part of the National Oceanic Survey, the former Coast and Geodetic Survey, and was phased out in 1976.
