The Cambridge Springs 1904 Chess Tournament

The small town of Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania was an unlikely location for what would would later be known as the greatest turn-of-the-century Chess tournament in the United States.

The tournament was the brainchild of William D. Rider, Jr., owner of a luxury hotel  in the resort town of Cambridge Springs. In an effort to promote the hotel, which was designed to be the greatest hotel between Chicago and New York, Rider and the Erie Railroad sponsored the Cambridge Springs 1904 Chess Tournament to raise national awareness of both the hotel and the Cambridge Springs Area.

The tournament featured 16 players, including many of the world's great chess players. This includes the reigning World Champion Lasker, Chigorin, Schlecter, Pillsbury and Marshall. It is interesting to note that four of the sixteen participants of this single round-robin tournament had never played in an international chess tournament before!

The tournament was won by Frank Marshall, who finished the tournament undefeated with an impressive 13/15 result. Reigning World Champion Lasker tied with Janowski for distant second place with 11/15 result.

The tournament itself was considered wildly successful, from both a marketing and chess point of view. Mr. Rider had planned on making the Cambridge Springs tournament an annual event, but when he passed away the following year, with him went the hope for future events.
