Detailed item info

Synopsis
Joe Hill (aka Joseph Hillstrom King) follows up his critically acclaimed debut fantasy thriller HEARTSHAPED BOX with another guttural blow. HORNS describes the most hellish hangover of all time--Ignatius Parrish wakes up after a night of drunken debauchery to find two horns growing from his skull. Once the fog clears from his brain, Ig realizes that, along with the ugly pointy pair, he now was some very bizarre and very potent powers. He wastes no time putting his powers to use: Ig has been mourning the violent death of his girlfriend Merrin for about a year, living under the suspicious eyes of his small New Hampshire town. But how, Ig has the ability to find whoever it was that ruined his life--and to get the revenge he has long wanted.

Industry Reviews
"HORNS is more confident and unexpected [than Hill's first novel], taking risks in chronology and perspective for a narrative that starts off as dark comedy before becoming something richer and more affecting....HORNS ties together a little too neatly, but it never betrays the broken hearts at its core. Instead, it finds sympathy for them in the most unlikely places."
(02/25/2010)

"The strange thing about HORNS is that its opening scenes aren't all that strange. Its author, Joe Hill, is able to make Ig's problem seem like the most natural thing in the world. Mr. Hill writes with such palpable enthusiasm that he has no trouble hooking readers, especially with a book that is clearly on the side of the angels, though hellbent on using every devil reference it can. Although Mr. Hill is no mere trickster, HORNS does manage to get its devil into a blue dress with ridiculous ease."

"Devilishly delightful!"
(04/01/2010)

"Hill is confident enough to commit seriously to [his] premise but also poke a little fun at his story along the way. There are comic references everywhere, from the devil in a blue dress to an almost mandatory Rolling Stones allusion. Hill has already proved himself a leading light of fantastical writing in the 21st century, but what makes "Horns" such a pleasure is that he avoids the seriousness that can pervade books meant to be spooky. He understands that horror readers can have fun, even laugh, and that makes the scary parts more effective."
(03/27/2010)

"As in Hill's first novel, 2007's HEART-SHAPED BOX, the strands of the supernatural are woven tightly with the psychological, lending his work a dreamlike resonance. It's this quality that puts Hill in league with our finest fantasists (and distinguishes his style from that of his father, Stephen King)."
