The hobo nickel is a sculptural art form involving the creative modification of small-denomination coins, essentially resulting in miniature bas reliefs. The nickel, because of its size, thickness, and relative softness, was a favored coin for this purpose. However, the term "hobo nickel" is generic, as carvings have been made from many different denominations.
Due to its low cost and portability, this medium was particularly popular among hobos, hence the name.
Howard was first on the eBay scene in the fall of 2002 when he was laid off from his job, with no warning. He quickly made a name for himself, with his beautiful scrimshawed ladies. However with the ivory ban in January of 2009, he almost had to throw in the towel. While he still does quite a few custom scrimshaw pieces, his new passion is carving the hobo nickels. And it appears again, that he is best at carving the ladies! So expect to see a alot more ladies in the future, however there will be a few other things to keep it interesting.
