I purchased the "Hitachi 0F10383", as a backup storage device. What I liked most about this drive was the price and the approximate 1 TB of storage space it provides. It also seems to have a pretty decent transfer speed. Transferring a large file for this drive is child's play. There is really nothing to dislike about this drive. It serves my purpose's very well and it would do the same for you. This drive works just as good or better than many of the other drives I've owned from Hitachi or other manufacturers. I would highly recommend this drive and I would defintely go for another one the next time I'm in need of extra storage for my files.
This is the 2nd one of these drives I have purchased. I bought the 1st about 9 months ago. Both have performed perfectly: quiet and reliable. I like Hitachi's reputation for reliability. Also, unlike other drives I have used, the Hitachi drives installed without a problem in my older systems. The other drive (from a well known manufacturer) required me to buy special jumpers and install them before the drive would work. Plus, when I called the vendor (a major one) to buy the jumpers to make their drive work, they told me I was on my own to find them because they neither supplied them nor sold them. My experience with Hitachi has been much better and I have switched to Hitachi whenever I need a harddrive.
HGST boasts some pretty impressive MTBF's for their hard drives. This one was still in their warranty period, yet because it was sold to "an integrator/system builder," in this case HP, it was not covered. I have the sense that HGST's MTBF claims may have a fat-tailed distribution, vis a vis the "bell Curve" we normally envision. My business experience of over 40 years in IT tells me there was price advantage to the "system builder" for not passing along the longer HGST warranty to its customers; although, still, you get a HGST product...something about "swings and roundabouts."
I was very pleased with this purchase. I was using a IDE/SATA converter prior to purchasing. My system is running so much smoother. With the warranty and the size of the HDD it make the purchase all the more worth it.
It worked as expected. I just wouldn’t jeopardize important data on an used drive, especially because it is so old.
