This is a well written book, but does continue the story on beyond where the movie takes it. The movie is far less graphic than the book (parents take note). I enjoyed reading the book after seeing the movie and am continuing on with the next in the series. I would however not recommend this book to young children or children who have trouble with nightmares or who are very sensitive to imagery. These books while written for kids are very graphic and in some cases quite violent. As a Christian I would recommend that you read this book first before your child does and then be sure to discuss this book with them as they read along. Since the author uses a twisted version on the Christian faith, it is important you understand what they are reading. I found his use of alternate dimensions to be very good, as we now know that at least 11 dimension exist. Fascinating tale, but heavy ready for adults, let alone children. Better to read with your kids.Read full review
Simple, easy to read in every day English. You will be absorve by this Pullman Novel in such a way that you will feel part of it. Apart from the Movie, the book goes a lot further in details; vivid details. I just wished that some of the sections of the book would had been part of the movie, which I watch 3 or 4 times. Will make a great gift for that reading enthuthiast you know young or old. I have 11 year old twins, boy and a girl, and they take their turn to read it and then discuss what they have read. Can you imagine being able to keep those two occupied few hours a day in the sunmmer? Thank You Pullman. Highly Recommended. Eorraca787
This book was recommended to me, and I had to look in the children's section at the bookstore to find it. That left me a little skeptical, but I bought and read it anyway... I'm so very glad I did; I couldn't put it down! The Golden Compass is sci-fi/fantasy meets adventure meets quantum physics anyone can understand... a fascinating combination all the way through. The characters are engaging, the pace is just perfect, and the author was really thinking. The following 2 books in the trilogy keep up the excellence.
Phillip Pullman His Dark Materials is a compelling story for children who are coming of age, and older. It is recommended to read the books with an open mind and understand that it has action, magic, and some descriptive violence. I love this story and had to purchase the books for my collection. First time I read The Golden Compass was in the 7th grade, back in the year 2003 at my school's library. I then had to check out The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. It is a captivating story using great imagination. The book will always be better than the TV shows, but the main reason I had to purchase these five books is because the two extra books that comes with the trilogy. I highly recommend these books for anyone who loves a sense of adventure...it's like a psychedelic trip.

This is an extremely well-written fantasy - fascinating, creative and compelling. The author is not too keen on Christianity, and I am, but I believe it's important to read all kinds of things, even, maybe especially - those I disagree with. I understand the movie glosses over the non-Christian part,(I HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET) and it doesn't come clear in the books till the 3rd one in the trilogy. My kids wanted to read it, and I let them, and we had lots of good discussion afterwards.
