The Heil PR-40 is a wonderfully built, solid, smooth-sounding microphone. The shock mount gives a great deal of flexibility in mounting arrangements by providing the necessary shock isolation which obviates the need for a low shelf filter to roll off desk bumps and routine handling noise. As a result, the full spectrum of sound can easily be reproduced. AT a working distance of two inches from the face, there is a pleasing low end boost (called proximity effect) that enhances the voice.

Wow this is a great mic. Reasonable in price and awesome in design. The transformerless dynamic approach employed here really makes for a mic that has a wonderful well rounded sound, both crisp as it is warm. Nice lines and small body make it good around the drumkit (most times see below). These days with digital recording having a very flat frequncy response and low noise floor and mic pres getting ever flatter and clean, mics like this have even more relevance than in the days of just tape. The only things I have found that is a problem has to do with a very common design choice. Because the mic is a front address and rear connector design getting it in places is a trick sometimes eg.. Floor tom with the ride cymbal partially over the head. A right angle connector mic cable helps.
The Heil PR40 is incredibly detailed, well rounded and crisp. It really reproduces the full width of the voice very well; especially for pod-casting. Some great things is that it does not require Phantom power and it's end firing; meaning it picks up much less noise than other mic. The stand is quality is fair and works quite well although it is a bit tough to reposition sometimes; do wish it was a touch smoother. The cable comes tucked into the stand which is nice. The Heil shock mount is fantastic quality as expected.

This is my second buy on the Heil pr 40 microphone. I just love the way it sounds on my YAESU Ft-2000D HF Transciever. Gives you that low base natural sound like those high price broadcasting microphone. If you have not tried the Hell or 40 on your HF transceiver you do not know what you are missing.

I bought this microphone to be the mate to the one I bought a year ago. This mic's build quality is excellent as is its sonic characteristics and its rear-end rejection. I haven't found anything that doesn't sound GREAT through this mic. I have used it on kick drum, electric guitar speaker cabinets and vocals - all terrific. Bob Heil did an excellent job on this one. You won't be sorry if you buy the Heil PR-40 microphone!!!
