These old 4000 series printers are the best in my opinion. Solid, durable, & USA built, has a monthly duty cycle of 65,000 pages. The consumables that do need to be replaced (granted only every 100k-200k pages) are very easy to access on this unit. You can literally change the tray rollers & clutch in under a minute. Fuser literally only two screws. The only downside is these machines are heavy. 40+ pounds. It doesn't bother me but some may find them difficult to move, and it also adds cost to ship to an otherwise very reasonably priced reliable printer. Solid build quality though. I love seeing old machines out there still serving their purpose as well as they did when new. My LaserJet 4000, built in 1998, does just that. It even works with the HP print app on my iPhone. If you need a monochrome printer and don't need a million page-per-minute speed, go with this one. You won't regret itRead full review

Overall a good machine. The only problem is that the manual feed pad was worn which causes multiple pages to feed at one time. Because the unit shipped is an older version of the model, changing the feed pad is a bit of a pain.

This old printer is far superior in every way to the ones they are selling today. This will be printing for another few decades long after the newer ones are happily in the landfill. It is faster than the new ones. Its toners last longer. than new ones (6000 pages!). The paper tray holds an entire ream of paper. The handling of envelopes and other things through the manual feeder is perfect.

These are great printers. Have had one for over 11 years - bought it new - and have recently bought parts and another unit for my Dad. Can't kill these things, especially with home or home office use. These things are tanks. Rollers, trays, fusers, etc. are all readily available if something should break. Beware, though, of what some call "refurbished". To some sellers, this means blowing out the dirt and taking some Windex or 409 to the exterior, not replacing rollers and fusers as needed. Low page counts can be deceiving too, as this can easily be reset from the control panel. If you get a good one, should last forever. Many parts are interchangable with the LJ4050 and LJ4100, such as trays and even controller cards.
I love it because it is a PostScript laser printer which, with the addition of 8MB of extra memory, 2 network cards, and a new HP toner cartridge, is a big, powerful printer which all of my Macs and PCs from a Performa 6400 to a brand new Vista laptop can all agree on printing to. This compatibility, along with its durability and capability, makes it a printer I just had to have. Plus its looks kick butt, with only the 4200/4300/4250/4350 Series design coming close. It is a perfect printer for a home! Buy one today and if it works when it gets to you, you won't be disappointed with it! Mine did and I am sure happy with it!
