I purchased the HP2490C from Ebay.com at a 50% discount. I used the HP 1945 before, and the HP2490C has similar buttons on the front panel, but the operating system is the improved Windows Mobile 5.0 rather than the HP1945's Pocket PC Windows 2003. The Windows Mobile 5.0 very rarely requires a hard reset, while the IPAQ HP1945 required a hard reset frequently, especially when I was using Adobe Reader 2.0 to display large .PDF files. The HP2490C supports much more RAM, and also offers a slot for an SD Ram card. With the additional memory, more than 500Meg, many more programs can be stored, increasing the HP2490C's functionality. I use the Adobe Reader 2.0 for displaying .PDF files of the DART bus routes in Wilmington and Newark,DE; Agenda Fusion for displaying appointments, contact names and phone numbers, text files of information, such as doctors' and nurses' names; and projects; for running Windows Pocket Streets 2006 for storing and displaying maps of Wilmington and Newark, and Bling Bling Manager, a very convenient freeware program for keeping track of bank account balances and transactions. I have also loaded Excel Mobile and Word Mobile, for entering numerical data and text files. The Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system offers many more configurable features than the Pocket PC 2003 OS, including a very good audio system with bass and treble boost and AGC control, a Backlight system for configuring default ON time and brightness control, clocks and alarms, a GPS system that I use with Bluetooth and a Freedom Keychain GPS 2000 Receiver for 158 DBm 51 channel sensitivity that interfaces GPS data to the Windows Pocket Streets 2006 map program, giving pin point accuracy, much better than that specified in the advertisements, an HP Asset Viewer that lists all configuration information, and which was useful for my downloading Windows .NET Compact Framework 3.5, for updating from an earlier version of .NET Compact Framework, File Explorer for accessing files on the PDA, Internet Explorer, for accessing the Internet if you have a Wireless Connection, Outlook email, and many other features. The display window size of the two PDA's is the same, but the body of the HP2490C is slightly larger. The HP2490C comes with a protective plastic screen that lifts out of the way when a person uses the touch screen. This is important, because inadvertent shocks to the touch screen could easily damage the HP2490C. The IPAQ HP1945 did not have this protection. The HP2490C comes with a docking station for charging the battery and connecting the PDA to a PC USB 2.0 connector. This is much more convenient than the IPAQ 1945's cable connector, because the docking station is easily located, and gives the HP2490C an easily found location whereas the HP1945's cable connector was always hard to find. My overall summary is that the HP2490C is a good bargain and a quantum improvement over the IPAQ HP1945. The HP2490C offers a well thought out operating system that offers many more features, and it is a pleasure to use this PDA. HP offers a leather protective case that straps onto your belt, and that improves the accessibility of my PDA.Read full review
Another good product from hp. This is my second 2490 and I use it to do flooring audits of automobile dealers. The first one got wet and failed. It was revived by putting it in a bag of rice for a few days. DO NOT GET A 2490 WET! I have checked with Otterbox and for some reason they dont make a box for the 2490. Hard to see screen outdoors even at max brightness. In spite of these issues I would, and have, gotten another one. The newer models (915?)have a larger screen but seem to use up battery life faster. You can buy replacement batteries for the 2490 on EBay that have more capacity and last longer than the original hp batteries provided with the unit.
Good condition. Works great.
