Printed in the wake of the Counter-Reformation...this is truly a gem! Bound in its original 16th Century leather boards with a later nicely rebacked spine c1800s, this Latin Holy Bible contains only the New Testament, as issued.  Bible is profusely illustrated with metal cuts by Jacob Faber (also known as Jacques Lefèvre), a block-cutter active in Basel and Lyon circa 1516-1550.    Faber got his start working for the great humanist printer Froben in Basel, earned his reputation adapting the work of Hans Holbein for book illustration, and eventually established himself as an independent supplier of printing blocks, trading in his own work as well as that of other artists.  Faber's initials IF appear in some of the cuts. There are also some illuminated initials and head and tail pieces. This set of cuts was first used by Sebastian Gryphius (1492-1556) in his 1542 New Testament; he reprinted this edition at least six times before his death.  His heirs brought out an edition in 1564, and his son Antoine published an edition five years later in 1569.

 2 parts bound as one, 496pp and 343pp, although from 334-343 the text has been replaced in contemporary handwriting on leaves. Pages are quite clean and all are bound tight, although there remains a few small smudges, stains and brown spots, as shown. Text in Latin, with former owners manuscript in front, circa 1710. Lacking main title; first page of Matthew bound in its place. Colophon lacking. Otherwise text complete. 3.5" x 5". This is really a standout find.  A truly RARE Bible!
