HERE IS WHAT ONE OLD TIMER HAM HAD TO SAY USING A 5 ELEMENT W3IK BOBTAIL CURTAIN ARRAY:
LITERALLY PLUG N PLAY- WITH THIS SET UP YOU CAN CHOOSE TO AIM YOUR HIGH GAIN SIGNAL BIDIRECTIONALLY:
NORTH AND SOUTH, or EAST AND WEST COVERING THE FOUR COMPASS POINTS OF THE WORLD. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT FOR A ROTOR TO TURN YOUR ANTENNA, YOU SIMPLY FLIP YOUR ANTENNA SWITCH. INSTANTANEOUS!!!!!
Get on the air with a switchable high gain array in about an hour. How?
Toss the ropes in the trees, pull your antennas up.
Plug in your coax cables and an antenna switch and you’re on the air with a beam!
W3IK --- W 3 Indian Kilowatt BOBTAIL ARRAYS.
Available in 3, 4, or 5 elements 80 – 10 m.

You are bidding on a 40 meter model (switchable directivity)
Antenna arrays and antenna switch only – no coax, no weights, no rope.
EXTREMELY LOW ANGLE OF RADIATION: Angle of Radiation can be varied by moving vertical elements forward. Put them horizontal for a high gain cloud buster antenna, then switch back to low angle for DX.
When vertical, produces VERY HIGH GAIN IN BIDIRECTIONAL PATTERN
NO REQUIREMENT FOR HEIGHT ABOVE GROUND when vertical. PERFORMS EXCEPTIONALLY WELL AT LOW HEIGHT
NEEDS 34 FOOT HIGH TREES OR MAST TO ERECT
VERTICALLY POLARIZED, BIDIRECTIONAL GAIN, EQUIVALENT TO 4 PHASED VERTICALS
NO RADIALS REQUIRED --- NO COUNTERPOISE REQUIRED
PLUG AND PLAY: Antenna is ready to go, and as a switchable beam it does not get any easier than this: (1) Connect your two coaxial cable lines to the antenna (just screw the PL259 connectors into the SO239 female connectors on the insulator). (2) Use your rope or fishing line to raise your antenna into trees. For the 40 meter model, your tree or your mast must be 34 feet or higher. Coax, rope, mast, fishing line, antenna switch are not provided. Antenna Tuner recommended. Antenna installs in a horizontal "L" configuration. That is four elements in one direction, and then the other four elements 90 degrees perpendicular. Essentially if you were looking down on it, it would look like the letter L. That's it, quick and easy.
PERFORMANCE: Unbelievable. To be able to instantly switch directions means no delay waiting for the rotor to rotate, losing valuable time and possibly that rare dx. This antenna is constructed in the “old ways” of tradition by a ham licensed 41 years to include experience as a military operator and commercial radio telegraphy licensee. You can look at all the fancy computerized reports you like, but the real test comes to on the air performance. I have made these antennas for years, and it truly has been the best wire antenna I have used for DX. Using 300 watts and a 40m bobtail, I worked a US Army friend in Iraq who said it was the best 40m signal he had ever heard from the states. Using a 20m version it was common to hear Europe often an hour before I would hear most people working Europe. Running 100 watts, if I heard them, I could work them, and BUST pileups. Running QRP power of 5 watts it was often very typical to work one out of two European stations I heard. Running QRPP 500 milliwatts it was typical to work one out of five European stations I heard. I’ve worked all states with half a watt, try that on 40m from Tennessee with half a watt! Your experience may be different dependent upon your skills, mode of transmission, etc. However, this antenna excels. I have worked the world with them to include the South Pacific running half a watt.
QUALITY: These antennas are made utilizing insulated, stranded wire, and will give you years of satisfaction and superior performance. (Color of insulated antenna wire may vary from photo). The picture above is an example of bobtail antennas. Rather than change photos every ebay listing, I use the representative antenna to illustrate the antenna. Obviously if you order a 3 element, the above photo is of a 4 element, so use common sense, your antenna will arrive with one less element than the photo. Likewise if you order a five element, you know that the antenna you receive will have one more element than the photo above. Further, if you order the Switchable "Bobtail L" there would be another array of vertical wire elements added perpendicularly, which you don't see in this photo. The insulators are handcrafted from weather treated wood, stained, and sealed, for added weather duration, and are larger and thicker than traditional insulators, providing the added strength needed for this antenna. It takes me longer and is more costly money and time-wise for me to make these than buying traditional cheap plastic insulators, and with my insulators, I wood burn your callsign into the antenna insulators. It is just a personal touch that I provide. It is also reflective of radio handicraft of yesteryear, a part of history. Incidentally, most of the profits from these antennas go to support Big Brother Big Sister activities and my Little Brother who helps build these antennas. We thank you, and while you are out producing that huge signal, the profit you provided allowed a disadvantage kid to participate in some sport or activity he would not have otherwise been able to do. Thanks again
Trivia: Most amateurs are unfamiliar with the bobtail curtain arrays due to the complexity of the traditional bobtail requiring a matching LC circuit at the base feed point of the center fed vertical wire. Corner feeding the bobtail solves this problem by eliminating the LC matching circuit. More importantly, it makes feeding the antenna a joy by simply attaching coax to the corner element high above the ground. You will read various reports on the Internet about the Bobtail, most will claim: (1) six db gain for a three element bobtail over a standard half wave dipole, (2) very low take off angle essential for serious dx (some reports claiming about 18 degree takeoff angles), (3) no counterpoise or ground radial system required, (4) low elevation advantage (many have, myself included, have had the tails touch the ground) with huge performance success, (5) that a three element bobtail is the equivalent of a three phased verticals (a three element beam!). I make these antennas for HF Bands 80 through 10 meters in assorted arrays of 3 to 5 elements. Some hams have used two Bobtails with an antenna switch to easily cover all four directions of the compass. I offer the Bobtail "L" which does this. Imagine having a whopping 40 or 30 meter signal (or any other bands) from a 3, 4, or 5 element beam at the fraction of the cost of a huge yagi. You also have the advantage of not having to pay for, install, and maintain a tower for that yagi. The bobtail easily installs at a low height and between two trees or two masts. The Bobtail "L" requires three installation points (trees or masts). Remember, if you ordered the Bobtail "L" model, using your antenna switch will give you four-direction coverage at the flip of the switch, a low take off angle that will knock the socks off of yagi antennas, and at a fraction of the cost of huge yagis.
SHIPPING and Handling: Flat Rate $9 in Continental USA. Alaska, Hawaii, and overseas actual shipping costs. PAYPAL only. Shipping is done within 5-6 business days with delivery confirmation. It is important to understand that due to the time and number of these antennas being ordered, that shipping is often usually on the 5th or 6th business day after the close of auction.
Custom Orders for other bands are accepted and to be paid for via Ebay/PayPal. Please do not ask me to work outside of Ebay rules. People have asked if I make bobtails exceeding five elements, and the answer is yes. However, let's be practical, beyond five elements the antennas are excessively huge and the directivity is narrower making the antenna useful only for a select distant end geographical area. If you have a specific geographical area, then a six or seven element is feasible, if you have room for it.
