A 1896 edition of the Hermann Kaulbach classic work Madonna, printed by Franz Hanfstaengl in Munich.

We are pleased to present this antique work of art for your consideration. It is a print of the Hermann Kaulbach classic work Madonna which shows a young mother holding the hand of her Infant Child to her mouth. A lone Tear drips from her Sad Looking Eyes, perhaps as she contemplates the future life her innocent Child will lead. The bedding is modern, but the artist keys us in to the biblical allegory by showing a Saintly Halo behind the head of the Woman. She represents Mary, and the child is the infant Jesus, with her tear being for the loss she knows she will suffer. The picture is captioned in German at the bottom, which translates to A Sword Your Soul Shall Pierce in English.

The print is framed and matted. The frame measures 23-1/4 inches high and 18-1/8 inches wide, while the print within the mat is 11-1/2 inches high by 9-1/2 inches wide. The (unpacked) weight is about 4-1/2 pounds. The print is marked Copyright 1896 by Franz Hanfstaengl above the caption at the center, and has an additional 1896 copyright at the bottom right, within the image area.

The frame is solid wood covered with veneer on the front, and it looks old. The veneer has cracks in places, and some pieces of it have come loose, especially at the upper right corner. Corners show some gaps in the veneer. Delicate gold colored wood beading is found at the edge of the frame next to the glass, and some pieces of this have come loose. The glass has some waviness with a few defects suggesting that it is old. We rate the frame condition as good (see pictures).

The matting has a light stain at the upper left, but it does not extend into the print. The print shows no stains or damage, and we rate its condition as very good to excellent.

This is a nice example of one of the better known Hermann Kaulbach pieces. Its powerful imagery is sure to provoke conversation and discussion as to its meaning. It would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
