For sale is a hand-carved-top guitar/bouzouki made by noted Australian luthier Graham McDonald in 1998.  This instrument was made as an archtop bouzouki with a flat-back, guitar shaped body, and is most similar to McDonald's type 3 bouzouki as shown on his web site.  It was used for many years by the previous owner, and consequently has numerous minor dings and scratches on the body and bouzouki neck.  No cracks, however.  I bought it, thinking that i would learn to play bouzouki, but quickly gave up on that idea.  I had North Carolina luthier John Kinnaird make a guitar neck, bridge, and tailpiece, converting it to an acoustic archtop.  However, all the bouzouki parts were retained and are included so that it can be converted back to the original if desired.  (The missing bolt has been found.)

The guitar neck, which is mahogany, has an tree and full moon inlay on the headstock.  The bouzouki neck (wood unknown) has a eucalyptus leaf & fruit headstock inlay.  The scale length for both is 26".  The guitar neck has a 1 3/4" nut; the bouzouki nut is 1 3/8".  The bouzouki bridge has a pickup (hence the small hole in the top); the guitar bridge does not.  The top is sitka (?) spruce; the back and sides are flamed Australian blackwood, a near relative of koa.

The scale on the guitar was made somewhat long because i intended it to be tuned a full step below standard, or in DADGAD.  In standard tuning the guitar has a bright tone, similar to that of a bouzouki.  In the lower tuning the tone is much richer, though leaning more to the fundamentals than a flattop.  The sustain is very good.

Graham McDonald is a very well known luthier in the bouzouki/mandolin world who has written extensively about building bouzoukis and mandolins.  Check out his website (search his name or mcdonaldstrings) .  His current build price for a carved top bouzouki is $4500.  You can get this one (convertible between guitar and bouzouki) for substantially less.  The case shown is included.
