The story of an 8-year-old Mexican boy and soccer prodigy, Santiago Munez, who comes to Los Angeles with his baby brother, father, and grandmother for a better life. Ten years later, he still plays soccer, but also works two jobs, as a gardener and Chinese restaurant dishwasher. It IS a better life, but he wants more--to play soccer. Amazingly--this is a movie, after all--a former Newcastle United player watching his 7-year-old grandson play on a field adjacent to Santiago's sees him play and tells him to come to Newcastle. Will he make it? Watch the movie.

It is unique in that it is a Rudy like tale, but for the soccer fan. A bit hokey, but there are a number of twists and turns. There are a few likeable characters in this movie. It is in my top ten of these type of movies, but does nothing to really rise to the top. Perhaps it could have used a bit more seasoned actors. If you like the Hoosiers, Rookie of the Year, Rudy, Glory Road, Remembe the Titans genre you can't help but like this. If you are just a soccer fan you might be a bit disappointed. Perhaps this character has had to struggle more than some of our other heroes.
For a modern version of "David vs. Goliath", this story about a young aspiring soccer player getting a once in a lifetime opportunity to play for the English football leagues just grabs at your heart strings with every trial and tribulation young Santiago Munez (Kuno Becker) faces from his "nose to the grindstone" unsupporting father to going to a foreign land and learning he is not the superstar player he was at the local pick up games in Los Angeles. This well casted script and realistic challenges for this young hopeful keeps you wanting more for him around every turn to the point of rooting for him to the end.
great story even if not real
