Gibson Mastertone Earl Scruggs Special 5-String Banjo
Deluxe Earl Scruggs model with:
This Gibson Earl Scruggs Special was made in 2002, (serial number ES-02-80), and was originally owned by Charlie Cushman, a well-known Nashville session player. Cushman also worked as a tech at Gibson, where he hand-selected this banjo. He then became the banjo tech at Gruhn Guitars, where he eventually re-sold this instrument.
Following the story: the current owner purchased the banjo slightly used in 2009, at Gruhn. After receiving it, he determined he was not satisfied with the way the original tuners were milled at the Gibson factory – they had been slipping a little bit. He purchased new tuners identical to the originals, at a cost of about $500, and had them milled and installed by a local luthier. So, they are essentially “better than new.” The “old” tuners are included, as well as two unused gold Keith tuners (which will run you $275 to buy new), and an additional bridge.
The former owner also noted some fretwear on the 1st & 2nd strings at the 4th & 5th fret, when he received the banjo. He had the frets “stoned down,” but not crowned. The nut has also been replaced with an original Gibson nut.
The former owner, who brought it to us, noted that the truss rod is currently in we’d call in the neutral position. It can be adjusted to the positive or negative side to raise or lower the action, as the future owner prefers. In its current state, we notice a very slight buzz when played, but this will be corrected with a truss rod adjustment. We will be glad to have the truss rod adjusted depending on how the winning bidder might like the action, though this will take 1-2 weeks to get done by our luthier. Or, you can of course do this yourself at your end. We decided to not make any adjustment before listing the banjo, in case the future buyer wants it changed to their preference. Currently, the action measures between 3/32 and 4/32 of an inch at the 12th fret.
Some other things we noticed: the tailpiece cover has a bit of looseness to it and “flips” easily. This is apparently fairly common with these Gibson tailpieces. They can be tightened by pinching in the sides, or some players remove the cover completely. Or you can leave it as-is…shouldn’t be a big deal.
There is a very, very small ding on the neck underneath the 5th string tuner. It was difficult to photograph so you probably won’t even see it in the pics below. Otherwise, the banjo is in excellent cosmetic condition. No belt buckle marks or scratches that we could see.
The former owner is a smoker--and if you put your nose right up to the case lining you might detect a very faint smoke odor. Again, not a big deal, but we wanted to mention it.
Since this banjo has been in our shop, a few of our local pro players have been by to play it, and the comments have all been very positive. We mention all of the above items because we believe in being as descriptive as we can, so you know what you’re getting.
So in summary, we have a very clean example of a rarely available, highly ornate Gibson model. The previous owner poured a lot of time and money into the tuner improvements, and the additional original tuners and Keith tuners are some nice freebies. Overall we will place it in Very Good condition because of the truss adjustment needed, but it truly borders on Excellent, and is certainly in excellent cosmetic condition. Please contact us if you have any questions before bidding. If you are within driving distance of our shop in Takoma Park, MD (just outside Washington DC), you can come to try out the banjo anytime during our open hours.
About our eBay listings:
We take the time to write an individualized description on each and every item. We realize that buying instruments sight unseen can be very tricky, and we fully disclose any cosmetic flaws and playability issues on the item. If we are selling a new item and there is any evidence of shopwear, this will be included in the description (normally we will have also discounted the price appropriately). Check our feedback and you’ll see many of our buyers commented that the instrument arrived to them in even better condition that they were expecting. You can bid/buy with confidence—we offer a 14 day return policy.
Notes on international shipping: Serious bidders or buyers outside the continental US must contact us for a shipping quote before bidding or purchasing. Please include your city, country and postal code. We generally answer shipping inquiries Monday through Friday. Some information and guidelines for you: our preferred method of shipping internationally is USPS Express Mail. This method carries an insurance limit of $650. If the item is valued at over this cost, we can only ship by this method if the buyer assumes responsibility for any amount over $650 should the item be lost or damaged in shipping. To fully insure more expensive items, we will have to use UPS Worldwide or Global Express, both of which can range in cost from $300-$700. Some countries such as the UK, Australia, New Zealand & Hungary have very restrictive size limits on Priority/Express Mail, and in these cases we MUST ship items like guitars and banjos via UPS. You may have to pay customs duties as determined by your local jurisdiction upon the item’s arrival. We have no way of anticipating what these costs may be. Sorry, we do not adjust invoices to reflect a lower price for customs duties.
