Most people would never know that George Benson was primarily a guitarist set to "take the mantle" from Wes Montgomery. In fact, the people who have only known George in his "pop" incarnation wouldn't know who Wes Montgomery is...and therein lies the tragedy. George Benson was/is an accomplished guitar player and very well respected with the jazz community. If you don't believe me listen to "White Rabbit" off this very CD. George experienced the most success during the disco era by putting out watered down pablum which leads one to believe that his being considered one of the best guitarists in the world wasn't anything to be considered in light of how one was compensated. In other words folks, I could be the best but that don't pay the bills! The saddest truth of all is he gained one audience and by and large lost most of his other audience...money can't buy everything. Worst of all, about the time George started this stuff, the recording business was beginning to change. The record companies wanted (and still do) immediate revenue or guaranteed revenue and the industry became corporatized while simultaneously jazz/rock or fusion became commercialized in order to be palatable. Jazz albums sounded more like disco albums while the musicianship was compromised in order to "make a buck". I was there, I saw it/lived it and I believe it began with George Benson. If you are interested in hearing what George really plays like, get older records or Cd's like Bad Benson or something along those CD's etc.Read full review
