TURBINE POWERED RAT ROD
Here for sale is a 1983 Datsun 280zx. Yet this is no ordinary blast from the past. This nasty machine has a Gas Turbine Engine under the hood. Did I stutter? Nope. Its a TURBINE ENGINE.
The stock straight 6 banger was removed and a Garret GTP series turboshaft engine moved into the neighborhood. The engine is a mild and tamed horsepowered unit, producing 210 shp. Not overly aggressive or fuel hungry yet gets the job done. Sounds like 1000 hp and people will just nod and smile no matter what you tell them.
The turboshaft engine is coupled to a custom drop down reduction gearbox and then is mated to the factory 5 speed manual transmission. From there it heads on back to the independent rear suspension and then to the pavement.
Now for the details.
Car was epoxy primed and then top coated with a single stage urethane paint, color is: RAT ROD BLACK. So this is no prime and leave job. You have that great look, yet its a durable and long lasting finish. Exhaust is routed out the front of the hood. I chose a SR-71 Black bird/ Skunkworks theme for this lady. It only seemed fitting that this car had a aircraft theme to it. In the back you will find the skunkworks logo, with a set of tail numbers that have a secret meaning. If you figure it out let me know and I will knock $500 off. The T-top glass has ejection seat stickers on them. Tie down stencil font stickers in red are located front and back, and yes they actually mark out the tie rings on the car. Jet fuel only sticker above the fuel filler. Don't worry she burns just about anything. The headlights have custom cone covers to symbolize the SR-71 engine cones. They come off with two screws yet just give it that cool look up front. The hood has the factory louvers as well as the hatchback louvers which give it that mad max look. Wheels have full moon hub caps on them. Body is in decent shape. This is no trailer queen. It has some rust, imperfections and other body blemishes, yet who cares. The turbine is what makes this bad boy.
Stock interior with average wear and tear. Gray and Black. Door sill panels and arm rest have black and white striped caution tape on them for that run way feel. Digital EGT gauge on the right lower side of the steering wheel. N1 gas producer indicator up on the dash. Oil pressure is registered on the factory gauge. Brand new fire extinguisher with mount sits behind the passenger seat, yet is not shown in pictures.
The following are new, Batteries and battery hold downs, battery disconnect switches, starter solenoid, gearbox breather filter, vacuum reservoir tank and gauge, exciter, manual fuel shut off assembly, battery bank charger and shore line, etc.
Lights, turn signals, wipers, fuel gauge all work. Brakes are stock yet since the turbine produces no vacuum for the brake booster, a external vacuum pump was used to supply vacuum. It is a low powered unit so I coupled it to a vacuum reservoir canister to give it more A$$. I would recommend a higher powered unit later on from summit racing.
Heat doesn't work, yet the turbine makes plenty of heat. Just warm your hands on those cold days in the exhaust stream. Air condition doesn't work, that's what T-tops are for. Radio has been decommissioned. You probably couldn't enjoy it anyways with all the noise. Its really not bad, yet sure gets everyone's attention. Got to love it.
Turbine does not have a generator on it, so I installed a on board battery charger that needs to be plugged in after a days use.
As stated before its a rat rod, not perfect, yet all in all a very cool ride. This car will make you a rolling car show. You will steal the scene from any other JOE SMOE. Its so hard to be different these days and this car is down right different. Straight jacket short bus style different.
Add your finishing touches or just keep as is. You can use this as a engineering platform for another turbine build if you get hooked. Or pull the drive train out and slap it into something else. The sky is the limit.

Fuel consumption is about 20 or so gallons an hour.
Runs off of Keroseen, Diesel, Jet Fuels, AvGas, or combination of different fuels.
How fast? Not built for speed. She keeps up with traffic.
How hard is it to drive. Slight learning curve, have to de-train some of your natural instincts, yet easy to get the hang of.
