I bought this to guide me while riding trails on my dirt bike since it says its all rugged and all. You can check on Garmins website that its meant to be mounted on an ATV. Didnt quite work out as I expected. It comes with a pretty basic useless world map, so the first thing you have to do is spend more money to buy maps. Its not cheap but its easy, you can download from Garmins website but can be quite expensive since you dont have rights to updates. Since I need it for trails I need topographic and satellite imagery. Topographic for US only and the Birdseye satellite imagery has to be subscribed to (yes, more money) and only lasts for one year and the resolution is further away from the ground than Google Earth. Besides, having to download all the images piece by piece in large files for tiny pieces of land each time is a pain, this is really annoying and tremendously time consuming and can be impossible and cost you many MicroSD cards if you want to cover large areas, like whole countries. Overall its bigger, thicker and heavier than I thought. Its pretty rugged alright, being waterproof and dust proof. But you dont want to drop it on pavement. Runs on included rechargeable battery or 3 AAA, which is a good feature if your battery runs out in the field. Nice big good contrast LCD touch screen. The screen film is a must to protect the large LCD screen from scratches. Nice features, like using it as a regular turn by turn GPS and geo tagged camera that records the position of the photos. Picks up GPS signal fast but I think that the system navigation and the interface, although simple and straight forward, is a bit too slow, a bit annoying actually when already moving fast. Lots of stuff for campers and fishers and probably good for boats too. Not really very useful for me though. Has two mounts for cars and a mount for motorcycles/ATVs. Havent mounted on my bike, dont think I ever will. Probably use it as a handheld or in the car.Read full review
I have he unit for just few weeks, and I am trhrilled about it. It is really verstile use, tough and solid designed. I was aming for device that will cover all over navigation, when finishing with Auto NAvigation, just snap it of the mount and take it with you anywhere. The software is lightning fast, No matter how many maps you installed. It hase minor drawbacks but they are tiny and can be overrided by fine tuning. Customisation of profiles is great. It is mayme too much customizable so one can be lost in customization. I would like to be able to measure distance on the map! Previously I used: GPS I, GPS III, Etrex Summit, GPS MAP 60CS, GPS MAP 60CSX and many of nuvi loine, I can say that Montana hass all of the best of all previous models, and I repeat it is Lightning Fast!!! It is a bit expensive but worth every penny! Hope that future updates will fix random restart isue.Read full review
I used to have GARMIN GPSMAP 60csx. I loved to use in mountain climbing, driving, and traveling. Unfortunately, I lost it in a mountain. I bought new GPS, Garmin Montana 650. It works excellent, and is easy to use, record, read, and even make and follow my own map. I enjoy my mountain climbing with it very much.
The montana is a great GPS, easily read even in the sun. Touch screen is nice but a pain with gloves. Having buttons on an old school GPS is preferable to me. Been using GPS in the military since the very early 90's.
