One of the most complete listings of Merchandise ever offered by a single distributor!"

This publication is over 66-years old and would make a fantastic gift for a catalog collector, historian or collector of period items.

ABOUT THE WORTHINGTON COMPANY: The founder, George Worthington, made his fortune selling tools to workers during the construction of the Erie and Ohio Canal. Worthington owned a total of 14 buildings in Cleveland's Warehouse District.

Actively involved in Cleveland's financial life, Worthington helped organize and served as president of the First National Bank of Cleveland, and as director of the Ohio Savings and Loan Bank and Hahneman Life. Besides his interest in financial matters, Worthington was involved in numerous iron (i.e. steel) manufacturing businesses.

Generating revenues in excess of $1 million annually (within only a few years of its founding in 1829), the George Worthington Co. constantly required relocation to even larger facilities. In 1882, the hardware wholesaler (turned industrial supply company) moved into its last building at 820 St. Clair Avenue. Designed by the Cleveland architectural firm of Cuddell and Richardson, The George Worthington Building is known as being a "highly decorative brick structure - notable for its unusually wide window bays grouped in two multi-story arched ranks, a brick cornice, recessed spandrels and finials." The George Worthington Building (along with its neighbor, the Gilcrest Building), having fallen into disrepair during the later half of the 20th century, were rehabilitated in 1996 into 53 modern loft apartments (on what is today "Worthington Square").

Worthington did much to build up the city, especially in the business portions, and at one point owned 14 buildings in what is today the "Historic Warehouse District." He did much toward converting the Village of Cleveland, as he found it, into the great city of today.

The George Worthington Company was once Cleveland's oldest company in existence under its original name and one of the country's leading hardware wholesalers and industrial distributors. The George Worthington Company filed for bankruptcy in 1986. [Research credited to Wikipedia.com and Flickr]
