Like: The unit works very well, it is quick and the zoom feature gives me an overall view of the planned route. The trackback feature is great. When off road it brings you back to the trail head without problems. Dislike: The instructions are not clear on many functions. I have older Garmin gps unit so I as able to figure some of them out. My wife has tried to use it to find specific addresses and just gives up. When you start to type in an address the unit suggests possible matches. If you try to finish the typing it reverts back to the previous screen. When you search for gas stations in the area as an example it finds some and not others. The same with retail stores. We 'tested' the unit while in the parking lot of a particular store. When we typed in the store name it gave us addresses of 4 stores with that name but not the one where we were. Not sure why. It was not a new store or location. A few days later I tried that store name again from a different location and it showed up on the screen. Confusing.Read full review
This has been a great purchase, it is accurate and fairly easy to use. I like knowing how far it is to next turn. It moves easily between vehicles and on the motorcycle the mount is solid and secure. I like that I can mark points as I travel then combine them later to create a custom trip. It's accuracy is impressive and it's interesting to see the topo that's just out of sight on the sides of the road. The speed limit being shown is a very nice benefit as is the trip computer. There is a tremendous amount of accessories on eBay to customize this device. More voices would be nice but the existing ones are pleasant enough.
I purchased this GPS to update the one I already had and because it did geocaching. The unit has been pretty good. I can't get it to accept a map card for more finite maps, but I think I just need to keep researching this issue. I also had trouble deleting items via my computer. Contacted Garmin and then told me it was my computer and the GPS works great now. It is very clear and accurate - I just love it. The additional dash mount makes the unit superb. Now if it just had a wall charger it would be perfect.
I was looking for a crossover GPS unit that I could use for driving, but also use for finding fishing spots when ice fishing and even boating. I purchased the Lake MAster lake map chip for this unit and it works great! Most Nuvi models will accept the chips, but the 500 and the 550 are the only ones that have a specific boating mode so you don't have to go into settings to disable defaul road maps and select the lakemaps to be displayed. Switching from driving mode to boating mode is exactly what I needed for easier switching to lake maps without the extra steps. This does it all. Easily mark locations, on the water or off. Follow trails or paths that you have saved. Then easily switch back to driving mode to get back home. The Garmin Nuvi line is known for ease of use, and this model is no exception. I haven't had any issues at all with it yet. I did run into a few outdated roads that had been moved due to construction, but that can be fixed with updated maps. I would strongly recommend this model to anyone looking to use a GPS for multiple uses across all terrain!Read full review
Pretty good - has a known issue with the date that Garmin won't fix (search "nuvi 500 and nuvi 550 Time and Date are Incorrect") but not a big deal.
