FUTURAMA is an animated sci-fi comedy from the genius of Matt Groening, the mastermind responsible for THE SIMPSONS. The show was equally hilarious as its predecessor, and sported a cast of guest characters to rival Homer and pals, including the voice of Al Gore as himself in "Crimes of the Hot," and William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy in "Where No Fan Has Gone Before," a priceless spoof on Star Wars fans. The story centers around Philip Fry, who in 1999 accidentally got himself cryogenically frozen while working a dead-end job as a pizza delivery boy. Waking up in the year 3000, he's given another chance, and goes to work at the Planet Express Corporation, again as a delivery boy, but this time to the farthest reaches of the galaxy. He also befriends Leela, a beautiful one-eyed mutant alien, and Bender, a robot with a substance abuse problem. Episodes include "Jurassic Bark," "Bend Her," "Three Hundred Big Boys," and "The Farnsworth Paradox."Read full review
Futurama is an excellent show with wonderful characters, exciting stories and hilarious jokes! If you like sci-fi, you'll love this show. Not only funny, but very clever...lots of "in jokes", especially making fun of other science fiction characters and ideas. Of course, buying any DVD season set is a great idea. All episodes are perfect quality, no commercials, and all in their correct running order. Really, it is the only way to watch these shows. I am spoiled now, and dislike watching regular TV and prefer to get the DVD set. As for the DVD set itself...it is awesome! EVERY episode has a full length audio commentary by various members of the writing staff, producers, and voice talent. They tells you secrets of the episodes, funny stories and just goof around. I watch the DVDs for the commentaries as much for the shows themselves! Also, you get other extras such as storyboards for various episodes, how to draw the characters, jokes in the menu screens, etc. Even the box itself is great! You will see what I mean when you get it. If this is the first DVD boxset you have ever bought (like me) you will be spoiled. The DVDs of other shows are lacking terribly compared to all the bonuses you get in this one. I am so incredibly disappointed that this is the last of the Futuramas. If there were more, I would buy them in a second.Read full review
This is Matt Groening's other show. You know him....the creative force behind The Simpsons. Believe it or not, this show is even funnier! The great news (Good News, Everyone!) is that this show is coming back this year after several years off the air. Starting with the release of the full length movie, "Bender's Big Score" and culminating later this year with all new episodes on Comedy Central, I could not be happier to welcome back Bender, Fry, Leela, Zoidberg and all the gang. Let the hilarity ensue!! This DVD Box Set for season 4, the original series ending season contains many of my favorite episodes, such as "A Taste Of Freedom", "Bender Should Not Be Allowed On TV", "Where No Fan Has Gone Before" (guest starring the original Star Trek actors), "Bend Her" and "Three Hundred Big Boys". So why, you ask, should I be interested? Trust me...I took a pass originally, too. How could it possibly be as funny as the Simpsons? But once it hit syndication, I caught on....despite taking place 1000 years in the future, Groening weaves his unique brand of social satire into Futurama, picking apart the madness of the human condition no matter what the era. I say, Enjoy!!!!Read full review
Futurama is the essential cartoon for those viewers who ask a little more from their shows. While many see Futurama as the 'American Dad' of the Simpsons, (Simpsons creator Matt Groening created Futurama) Futurama is not just a few quick laughs but instead offers four seasons of character development and, unlike other cartoons of its kind, a serious romantic touch between its two protagonists Fry and Leela. Season Four is the last volume until Comedy Central releases its new seasons and offers some of the more serious episodes with more to offer than simple laughs. Of course, this season also houses some of the funniest episodes ever, and at its end Futurama fans will feel a certain sense of finality with the show... until the new seasons come out soon!
This DVD set mostly spans the latter half of Futurama. The show only became more poignant and brilliant as time went on. Some of the last episodes (See: Spanish Fry, The Farnsworth Parabox, and The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings) are definitely among the funniest things on TV that people never saw. While the series lasted five years, it's a wonder why it never saw the fame of its sibling show, The Simpsons. This series can be summed up in a quote from Bender: "Another science fiction show cancelled before its time." Upon finishing up this series, you'll come to realize the same thing and will be left wanting even more episodes of the show.
