I haven't copied any VHS to DVD yet, but have watched old recorded VHS tapes and this player has a nice sharp picture and takes the "noise" out of the picture with an excellent tracking feature. I also played a purchased DVD from several years ago and the images were clear, sharp and I couldn't tell that I was not watching live TV. Very light weight machine. It is several pounds lighter than the old Panasonic I have had for many years.

As a dvd player it worked okay, but I wanted to record movies from my direct tv dvr onto a dvd disk, so I ran the dvr through the dvd recorder, but after hours and hours all I could get was sound, but no picture... I hired a guy from a computer store to come to my house and even he could not get it to work... I used it for about 3 months just as a dvd player, then even that broke... The repairman said it would cost about $150 to fix it... IfI wanted just a dvd player, I could have gotten one for a third of the price.

The instruction booklet has 90 pages in English and I was overwhelmed by all the details, trying to sort the necessary from the redundant. Finally I went on Youtube. entered "youtube VHS transfer to DVD using combo recorder". and found a knowledgeable man who told me how to operate the thing in about six easy steps. I wasted over an hour on the booklet but once I understood the process, it was a piece of cake. If the owners manual had been better I would have given the product five stars. Just to give a better perspective, I am an 84 year old female.

Had to ship the first unit back because it would not work properly. The company was helpful, paid shipping back to them and then, at my request, shipped me another at no additional cost. They were willing to refund my money. This one works great so far, only had it for couple of weeks. Dubbing old VHS to digital (DVD) and the pictures actually are better once they were on my computer. Would recommend this product.

I like this recorder very much but it has a fatal flaw. The VHS side wears out very quickly leaving the machine able only to play DVDs. The DVD side still records very well if you plug a separate VHS player into it. I have already worn out the VHS side of three of these machines. The one I have just purchased is a back-up. Unfortunately, Funai is no longer making this machine and cannot repair the VHS side because they can no longer get the parts.
